Hugh IV of Saint-Pol was an important French noble who lived a long time ago. He was the Count of Saint-Pol from 1174 until he passed away in 1205. He also became the lord of a place called Demotika in Thrace for a short time. Hugh was known for joining two big journeys called the Third Crusade and the Fourth Crusade.

Hugh's Adventures

Hugh IV joined the Third Crusade with Philip I, Count of Flanders. During this crusade, he showed great bravery. He was especially noted for his actions during the siege of Acre in 1191.

In 1194, the King of France, Philip II of France, rewarded Hugh for his loyal service. Hugh received control of lands like Pont-Sainte-Maxence, Verneuil, and Pontpoint.

Joining the Fourth Crusade

In the year 1200, Hugh decided to join the Fourth Crusade. Because of his past experience and high rank, he became one of the most important non-Venetian leaders. He was ranked fourth among the leaders, after Boniface of Montferrat, Baldwin of Flanders, and Louis of Blois.

Hugh took part in the capture of Constantinople on April 12, 1204. He was very strict about keeping order and stopping soldiers from taking things unfairly.

New Role and Final Days

After Constantinople was captured, the new Latin Emperor, Baldwin of Flanders, gave Hugh an important job. Hugh became the constable, which was a high military position. He also received the fortress of Demotika in Thrace.

Hugh IV passed away in March 1205 from a sickness called gout. He had a very grand funeral in Constantinople. Later, his body was brought back to France and buried in the Abbey of Cercamps.

Hugh was married to a woman named Yolande. She was the daughter of Baldwin IV, Count of Hainaut. Hugh and Yolande had two daughters together.
