|
The MacLeod clan has its own special symbols, called a Coat of Arms. These symbols tell a story about the clan's history.
Clan Mottoes
The MacLeod Coat of Arms has two mottoes:
- "Hold fast" is above the crest (the bull's head).
- "murus aheneus esto" is below the shield. This Latin phrase means "be thou a wall of brass." It suggests strength and protection.
Shield Design
The main shield is divided into four parts.
- The first and fourth parts show a castle. This represents the Clan MacLeod itself.
- The second and third parts show three armored legs joined together. This symbol comes from the royal Manx heritage, showing the clan's old connections to the Isle of Man.
Other Symbols
The Coat of Arms also includes:
- A bull's head as the crest.
- Two lions holding daggers, which are called "supporters," standing on either side of the shield.
