Hugh Massy, 1st Baron Massy (born 1700 – died 30 January 1788) was an important figure in Ireland during the 1700s. He was an Anglo-Irish peer and politician. A peer is someone who holds a special title, like a Baron, and is part of the nobility. As a politician, he helped make laws and govern the country.

Early Life and Family

Hugh Massy was the son of Colonel Hugh Massy. He also had an elder brother, General Eyre Massey, 1st Baron Clarina, who was also a well-known figure.

Hugh Massy married twice. His first wife was Mary Dawson. They had four children together. Later, he married Rebecca Delap, who was from Antigua. With Rebecca, he had seven more children.

Political Journey

Hugh Massy had a long career in public service. In 1739, he was chosen to be the High Sheriff of County Limerick. The High Sheriff was a very important person in the county. They were responsible for keeping law and order. They also helped with legal matters.

From 1759 to 1776, Massy was a Member of the Irish House of Commons. This was like being a Member of Parliament today. He represented County Limerick. In this role, he helped create laws for Ireland. After 1776, he represented Old Leighlin until 1777.

Becoming a Baron

In 1776, Hugh Massy received a very special honor. He was made a Baron in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he became a Lord. His full title was Baron Massy, of Duntrileague in the County of Limerick. This was a big recognition of his service.

Lord Massy passed away in January 1788. His son, also named Hugh, took over his title as the 2nd Baron Massy.
