Hugh Menzies (born 4 September 1857, died 13 February 1925) was an Australian politician. He represented the area of Stawell in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1902 to 1904. During this time, he was a member of the Ministerialist group, which supported the government.

Before becoming a state politician, Menzies was the Mayor of the Shire of Stawell. He held this local leadership role from 1895 to 1896. He was also the older brother of another politician, James Menzies. His most famous relative was his nephew, Sir Robert Menzies, who became the 12th and longest-serving Prime Minister of Australia.

Life and Early Career

Hugh Menzies was born in Ballarat, Victoria. His parents, Robert and Elizabeth, had moved to Australia from Scotland.

Before he entered state politics, Menzies had several important jobs. He worked as a bank manager, handling money and helping customers. He was also a publican, which means he owned or managed a pub or hotel.

Local Government Role

Menzies was very involved in his local community. He served for many years as a Councillor for the Shire of Stawell. A councillor is someone elected to help manage a local area, making decisions about things like roads, parks, and local services. His time as a councillor led to him becoming the Mayor of the Shire of Stawell.

State Politics

In 1902, Hugh Menzies decided to run for a seat in the Victorian Legislative Assembly. This is like the state parliament in Victoria, where laws are made for the state. He won the election for the Stawell seat as a Ministerialist candidate.

Changes to Electoral Districts

His time in the Victorian Legislative Assembly was short because the Stawell electoral district was later abolished. This meant the area he represented was combined with another. The new area was called the electoral district of Stawell and Ararat.

Menzies tried to win this new combined seat twice. He ran in both the 1904 and 1908 elections. However, he lost both times to Richard Toutcher, who was the current member for the Ararat area.

Family Life and Later Years

Hugh Menzies married Eleanor Lodge in 1885. They had a son and a daughter.

He passed away on 13 February 1925, at the age of 67. He was buried at the Brighton Cemetery. His legacy includes his service to the community and his connection to one of Australia's most famous political families.
