Hugh de Lotharingia facts for kids
Hugh of Lotharingia (born around 850-855, died 895) was an important person in the Frankish royal family. He lived during the time of the Carolingian dynasty. A dynasty is like a long line of kings or queens from the same family who rule a place one after another.
Hugh was the son of Lothar II. His mother was Waldrada, who was known as the king's special friend, but not his wife. Hugh was also the grandson of Lothar I. He held important titles like Count of Lotharingia and Duke of Alsace.
Early Life and Titles
Hugh was born into a powerful family. His father, Lothar II, was also a Count of Lotharingia. This meant he was a leader in that area.
In 865, when Hugh was still young, he was given the title of Duke of Alsace. This made him an important ruler in another part of the kingdom.
Later Years and Challenges
As Hugh grew older, he faced difficulties. In 885, his uncle, Emperor Charles the Fat, accused him of trying to gain more power. Because of this, his uncle removed him from his positions. Hugh was then sent to live in a monastery, which is a place where religious people live. He stayed there until he passed away in 895.
