Huichapan is a town and a municipality located in the central-eastern part of Mexico. It is one of the 84 municipalities in the state of Hidalgo. This area is known for its rich history and culture.
The name Huichapan comes from the Classical Nahuatl language. It means "place of abundant water" or "river of great abundance." The town is also known as Nxamädo in the Otomi language, which is spoken by some of its people.
In 2020, about 47,425 people lived in the municipality of Huichapan. This was an increase from 39,734 people in 2005. A small number of residents, around 425 in 2017, speak an indigenous language, mostly Otomí del Valle del Mezquital. The municipality covers an area of 668.1 square kilometers.
