Hulsey Lake is a beautiful lake located near Escudilla Peak in the Apache National Forest in Arizona. It sits very high up, at about 8,620 feet (2,627 meters) above sea level. This lake is part of the Apache–Sitgreaves National Forests. Hulsey Lake gets its water from Hulsey Creek, which is a smaller stream that flows into Nutrioso Creek. Because of heavy snow and ice, it's usually hard to get to Hulsey Lake from November until the middle of April each year.

About Hulsey Lake

Hulsey Lake is about 4 acres (1.6 hectares) in size. It's usually around 10 feet (3 meters) deep, but it can get as deep as 12 feet (3.7 meters). The area around the lake is covered with many trees, and the forest comes right down to the water's edge.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department adds rainbow trout to Hulsey Lake in the spring and early summer. This is called "stocking" and helps keep fish in the lake for people who like to fish.

Why Fish Stocking Changes

As summer goes on, the lake can get quite weedy. Also, the water's pH levels can become too high. These conditions make it hard for the young fish to survive. Because of this, the department stops stocking fish later in the season.

During the cold winter months, the lake often experiences a "winter kill." This means that most, if not all, of the fish do not survive the winter. So, there are usually no fish left in the lake from the previous year when spring arrives.
