The Hult Center for the Performing Arts is a special place in Eugene, Oregon. It's where people go to enjoy live shows like music, dance, and plays. Think of it as a big, exciting theater!

The Hult Center is right in the middle of downtown Eugene. It's on Willamette Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues. It sits next to the Graduate Eugene hotel and conference center. Both the Hult Center and the hotel were finished in 1982. They were built as part of a big plan to improve the city. Voters in Eugene approved the money for these projects in 1978.

The City of Eugene runs the Hult Center. It's one of two places for performing arts that the city owns. The other is the Cuthbert Amphitheater. The Cuthbert Amphitheater is in Alton Baker Park. It is managed by a different company.

Many architecture companies wanted to design the Hult Center. Twenty-seven firms competed for the job. The Eugene City Council chose a company from New York. This company was called Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates. They had designed other famous concert halls before. These included Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis and Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver.

What's Inside the Hult Center?

The Hult Center has several different spaces for performances and events. It's not just one big room! There are two main performance halls. There is also a meeting space and lots of public art to see.

  • Silva Concert Hall: This is the biggest hall. It has 2,448 seats. It's perfect for large concerts and shows.
  • Soreng Theater: This theater is smaller and more cozy. It has 495 seats. It's great for plays and more intimate performances.
  • The Studio: This is a flexible space that can hold up to 200 people. It's used for smaller events and rehearsals.
  • Jacobs Community Room: This room is used for meetings and community gatherings.
  • The Cuthbert Amphitheater: While not inside the Hult Center, this outdoor venue is also owned by the City of Eugene. It's in Alton Baker Park and can hold about 5,000 people for outdoor concerts.

Who Performs at the Hult Center?

Many amazing groups perform regularly at the Hult Center. These groups are called "resident companies." They have a special agreement with the Hult Center. To be a resident company, they need to perform a certain number of shows. They also need to have a certain number of people attend their performances.

In return, these groups get special benefits. They get to choose their performance dates first. They also get discounts on renting the halls. Plus, they can apply for money from the Hult Endowment. This helps them put on their shows. It can be challenging to meet all the requirements.

Here are some of the current resident companies:

  • Ballet Fantastique: A ballet company that performs beautiful dance shows.
  • Eugene Ballet: Another wonderful ballet company.
  • Eugene Concert Choir: A large group of singers who perform choral music.
  • Eugene Opera: This company puts on exciting opera performances.
  • Eugene Symphony: A full orchestra that plays classical music.
  • Oregon Bach Festival: A special festival that celebrates the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and other composers.
