Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Humfrid was an important leader in a region called Gothia. He was a count of several areas, including Barcelona, Girona, Empúries, Roussillon, and Narbonne. He held these titles from 858 to 864. He was also known as the margrave of Gothia, which meant he protected the borderlands.

Humfrid came from a powerful family called the Hunfridings. His father was Duke Hunfrid II. Humfrid had problems with King Louis the German, who ruled East Francia. Because of this, Humfrid had to leave his home. He went to King Charles the Bald, who ruled West Francia. Humfrid was one of the few people who stayed loyal to King Charles during a difficult time in the 850s. King Charles made him a count and margrave in the area known as the Marca Hispanica, which was a border region. This happened sometime between 854 and 858.

Working for Peace and War

In 858, Humfrid worked to make peace. He made a treaty with Abd al-Rahman, who was the Moorish governor of Zaragoza. After this, Humfrid traveled to Gaul to help King Charles. He arrived in February and promised his loyalty to the king in March.

Humfrid then joined King Charles in fighting against the Norsemen. While they were busy, King Louis the German tried to invade the country. Humfrid helped King Charles stop this invasion. In September, Humfrid gathered his forces. He then joined King Charles in defeating King Louis at Saint-Quentin in January 859.

During these campaigns in 858, Humfrid was also given control of the County of Autun and the Margraviate of Burgundy.

Challenges and Conflicts

The Moors were a strong force in the region. In 856, they captured a castle called Terrassa near Barcelona. Later, in 861, they surrounded Barcelona itself. Humfrid managed to make a deal with them. He paid them money to leave, and he renewed the peace treaty. King Charles agreed to this treaty, which was meant to last for 30 years.

In 862, King Charles named his son, Charles the Child, as the new king of Aquitaine. Many nobles did not like this decision. Most of them, except for Humfrid, did not support young Charles when he rebelled. King Charles the Bald then accused Humfrid of not being loyal.

Losing Power and Moving On

On August 19, Humfrid was removed from his position as count. But he did not give up easily. He took control of Toulouse and, during the fighting, Count Raymond I was killed. In response, King Charles took away all of Humfrid's lands in Burgundy.

Even Pepin II of Aquitaine, who also wanted to be king, attacked Toulouse with a group of Norsemen. But Humfrid pushed them back. After these events, Humfrid left and went to Italy. From there, he went to Swabia. By 872, he was a count in Zürich. He was still alive in 876.
