Humphrey Ewing Crum-Ewing (born July 16, 1802 – died July 3, 1887) was an important Scottish politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party. From 1857 to 1874, he served in the House of Commons. This is a main part of the UK Parliament.

Early Life and Family

Humphrey Crum-Ewing was born as Humphrey Crum. His father was Alexander Crum from Thornliebank, Scotland. His mother was Jane Maclae. She was the daughter of Walter Ewing Maclae. Humphrey also had a brother named Walter Crum, who became a famous chemist.

Humphrey went to school at Glasgow College. In 1853, he changed his name to Ewing. He did this because of his uncle's will. His uncle was James Ewing of Strathleven.

Business and Public Service

Humphrey Crum-Ewing was a successful businessman. He owned land and businesses in the West Indies. He was also the head of the West Indian Association of Glasgow. This group helped businesses connected to the West Indies. He was also a director for the Colonial Company in London.

Besides his business, he helped his local community. He was a Deputy Lieutenant for Dumbartonshire. This was a special role helping the Lord Lieutenant. He was also a J.P. for several areas. A J.P. helps keep law and order in the local community.

Political Career

Humphrey Crum-Ewing first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) for Paisley in April 1857. He did not win that election. However, he tried again later that year. In November 1857, he was elected as the MP for Paisley.

He kept this job until 1874. As an MP, he worked in the House of Commons. This is where laws are made for the United Kingdom. After leaving Parliament, he became the Lord Lieutenant of Dumbartonshire. He held this important position from 1874 until he passed away in 1887. He was 84 years old when he died.

Personal Life

In 1826, Humphrey Crum-Ewing married Helen Dick. Her father was the Reverend John Dick from Glasgow.
