Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Humphrey Smith (born around 1542 – died September 15, 1589) was an English politician. He came from London and Cullompton, a town in Devon.

Early Life and Education

Humphrey Smith started his education in 1556 at the Inner Temple. This was a special place in London where people studied law to become lawyers or judges.

In 1586, he married a woman named Ursula. They had one son together, named Walter.

His Career in Law and Politics

Humphrey Smith had an important job as a Justice of the Peace (JP). A Justice of the Peace was like a local judge or a person who helped keep law and order in an area. He was a JP for Devon from about 1573 to 1587. He also served as a JP for Middlesex from around 1579 until he died.

At the Inner Temple, where he studied law, he became a bencher in 1574. This meant he was a senior member of the legal society. He also gave special lectures, called "readings," in 1576 or 1577 and again in 1587.

Because of his legal work, Humphrey Smith likely spent most of his time in London. He was also supported by a powerful person, Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford, who was his patron. A patron was someone important who helped support another person's career.

In 1571, Humphrey Smith became a Member (MP) for Bodmin. This meant he was chosen to represent the people of Bodmin in the Parliament of England. Parliament was the main law-making body of England.

His Death

Humphrey Smith passed away on September 15, 1589. He made his will on the same day. His wife, Ursula, was put in charge of his affairs. Their son, Walter, was only eighteen months old at the time and was left in his mother's care.
