Hunzahúa was the very first zaque, a powerful ruler of the northern Muisca. His capital city was Hunza, which was named after him. At the same time, Meicuchuca was the zipa, or ruler, of the southern Muisca people.
Who Was Hunzahúa?
Hunzahúa was chosen by other leaders to bring peace to the Muisca region. He became the first zaque of the northern Muisca, based in Hunza (today's Tunja). One of his most important rules was to ban the use of weapons.
Hunzahúa's Kingdom
The northern Muisca kingdom under Hunzahúa was very large. It stretched from the Chicamocha River all the way to the area where the Sutagao lived, near Fusagasugá. It also went from the flatlands of San Juan to the border areas with the Panche and Muzo, including places like Vélez.
This time of peace and unity helped the Muisca people keep their Chibcha language and their beliefs. However, this peace ended when the southern Muisca zipa, Saguamanchica, started a war against the northern zaque, Michuá. Michuá took over as ruler after Hunzahúa in 1470.
