Huoshan Huangya tea (simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: 霍山; pinyin: huòshān huángyá) is a special kind of yellow tea from Huoshan County in Anhui Province, China. It's also known as "Huo Mountain Yellow Sprout." This tea has a long history, dating back to the Ming Dynasty, when it was considered a very important tea for the emperor.

What is Huoshan Huangya Tea?

Huoshan Huangya is a type of yellow tea. Yellow tea is made in a unique way that gives it a slightly different taste and color than green tea. It has a fresh, bamboo-like smell. When you brew it, the tea turns a pretty green-yellow color. It also has a sweet and nutty flavor.

How is it Made?

Huoshan Huangya tea leaves are carefully picked. They are usually harvested in early April. Only the youngest parts of the tea plant are chosen. This means pickers look for one bud and one leaf, or one bud with two leaves that haven't opened yet. These young leaves give the tea its delicate flavor.

A Special Imperial Tea

For a long time, Huoshan Huangya tea was a "tribute tea." This means it was grown and prepared especially for the emperor and his royal family during the Ming Dynasty (which lasted from 1368 to 1644). Only the best teas were chosen for the emperor. This shows how highly valued Huoshan Huangya tea was.

Appearance of the Tea Leaves

When the tea leaves are dry, they look shiny and bright. They are quite similar to another famous Chinese tea called Huang Shan Mao Feng tea. Both teas come from the same region and share some visual qualities. Because this tea is made mostly from young buds, its color and smell are usually very light and subtle.
