History of Hurleton
The community of Hurleton was started by a man named Smith H. Hurles. He moved to this area in the late 1800s and built a hotel. Because of him, the place began to grow.
The area was also known as the Boston Ranch. This name came about because Smith H. Hurles used to live in Boston, Massachusetts, before he moved to California.
The first post office in Hurleton opened in 1880. It was named Hurleton to honor Smith H. Hurles. He was also the very first postmaster, which is the person in charge of a post office.
