Huron (hamlet), New York facts for kids
Huron is a small community in Wayne County, New York, United States. It is known as a hamlet, which is a very small village or settlement. Huron is located in the southern part of the larger area called the Town of Huron.
This hamlet sits about four miles (6 km) northwest of the Village of Wolcott. It is at an elevation of 390 feet (119 meters) above sea level. The main roads that cross in Huron are Lummisville Road (also called County Road 155) and North Huron Road (County Road 156). Most of the community is found just south of where these two roads meet.
Government and History
The Town of Huron has its main government offices located near the hamlet. You can find them on Lummisville Road, east of the hamlet, close to Rice Mill and Dutch Street Road (County Road 158). These offices are where important decisions for the whole Town of Huron are made.
Historic Buildings in Huron
Huron is home to some interesting old buildings that tell us about its past.
The Huron Grange
One important building is the historic Huron Grange P of H #124. It was built in 1884 and is located on North Huron Road. A "Grange" is a local organization for farmers and their families. This particular Grange was very special because it was home to the first "Juvenile Grange" in New York State. A Juvenile Grange is a group for younger members, teaching them about farming, community, and leadership.
The Old Town Hall
Right across the road from the Huron Grange, you will find the Old Huron Town Hall. This building was constructed around 1849. For many years, it was the main place where the Town of Huron conducted its official business. This included meetings, record-keeping, and other administrative tasks. The town used this old hall until a new government building opened on Lummisville Road in 1979.
