History of Wolcott
Early Settlement and Growth
The land where Wolcott is now was first bought in 1805 by a person named Jonathan Melvin. People from New England then moved to the area and started settling it.
The village officially became a village in 1852. It was re-established as a village again in 1873.
Important Events
Wolcott faced some big fires in the late 1800s, specifically in 1874, 1876, 1879, and 1884. These fires caused a lot of damage to the village.
In 1913, a special statue called "Venus arising from the sea" was bought for $875. This statue was placed to mark a public drinking fountain that came from a natural spring. It was one of six such statues made and can still be seen proudly in the center of the village today.
The name "Wolcott" actually means "wolf's den or cottage." This gives us a hint about what the area might have been like a long time ago!
In 2001, a special area called the Wolcott Square Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important place with historical buildings and features that are worth protecting.
