Hurricane Bret facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hurricane Bret was a powerful storm that hit Texas in 1999. It was the only big hurricane to strike Texas during the entire 1990s. Even though it was strong, it hit an area where not many people lived. This helped keep the damage lower than expected.

Hurricane Bret: A Powerful Storm

Hurricane Bret was a tropical cyclone that grew very strong. It became a major hurricane, meaning it had very fast winds. The storm hit the coast of south-central Texas. This happened between August 22 and August 23, 1999.

How Strong Was Hurricane Bret?

When Hurricane Bret reached Texas, its winds were very powerful. They blew between 115 and 125 miles per hour. This made it a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale. Even though it was a strong storm, it was not a very large hurricane in size.

What Was the Impact of Hurricane Bret?

Thankfully, no one died directly from Hurricane Bret's winds or floods. However, four people did die because of things related to the storm. For example, accidents can happen during evacuations.

Even though Bret was a major hurricane, it caused less damage than expected. This was partly because it hit an area of Texas where not many people lived. This meant fewer homes and buildings were in its direct path.
