Hurricane Diane facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hurricane Diane was a very powerful and destructive storm that hit the U.S. East Coast in 1955. It caused a lot of damage and sadly, many people lost their lives. Diane was one of several hurricanes that affected the East Coast that year, along with Connie and Ione. Because of how much damage it caused, the name Diane was later retired, meaning it will never be used again for another hurricane.

What Was Hurricane Diane?

Hurricane Diane was a strong tropical storm that formed in the Atlantic Ocean. It became a hurricane and moved towards the eastern parts of the United States. Even though it weakened a bit before hitting land, it still brought a huge amount of rain.

Diane's Path and Impact

Diane first made landfall near Wilmington, North Carolina. It then moved inland, but instead of weakening quickly, it kept a lot of its moisture. This moisture caused extreme rainfall as the storm moved north.

Flooding and Damage

The biggest problem caused by Hurricane Diane was severe flooding. Many areas, especially in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and New England, saw record-breaking rainfall. Rivers overflowed their banks, washing away homes, bridges, and roads.

  • Towns were completely underwater.
  • Thousands of people had to leave their homes.
  • The floods caused billions of dollars in damage, which would be even more today.
  • Sadly, many people died because of the floods, making it one of the deadliest hurricanes of its time.

Why Was It So Bad?

One reason Diane caused so much flooding was because another hurricane, Hurricane Connie, had hit the same areas just a few days before. Connie had already soaked the ground, so when Diane's heavy rains arrived, the ground couldn't absorb any more water. This made the flooding much worse than it might have been otherwise.

The Name 'Diane' Retired

When a hurricane causes extreme damage or many deaths, its name is often "retired." This means the name is taken off the list of names used for future storms. The World Meteorological Organization does this to remember the storm's impact and to avoid using a name that brings back bad memories. Hurricane Diane's name was retired because of the terrible flooding and loss of life it caused.
