Hurtle Square, also known as Tangkaira, is a well-known public space in the heart of Adelaide, South Australia. It is one of five main squares found in the city centre. You can find it in the south-eastern part of Adelaide, where Halifax and Pulteney Streets meet. Its northern edge is next to Carrington Street.

This square was planned in 1837 by Colonel William Light. He was the Surveyor General (the person in charge of mapping land) for the new colony. Colonel Light designed six squares in his plan for the City of Adelaide. In 1837, a special committee named the square after James Hurtle Fisher. He was South Australia's first Resident Commissioner, a very important leader at the time. Later, in 2003, the square was also given a second name, Tangkaira. This name comes from the Kaurna language, which is the language of the Aboriginal people who originally lived in this area.

History of Hurtle Square

The Street Naming Committee officially named the square Hurtle Square on May 23, 1837. They chose the name to honour James Hurtle Fisher, who was the first Resident Commissioner of South Australia.

Why is it also called Tangkaira?

In March 2003, the City of Adelaide started a special project to give important places a second name. This project worked with the University of Adelaide. The goal was to recognise the traditional owners of the land. Hurtle Square was then given the Kaurna name "Tangkaira."

Tangkaira was also known as Charlotte. She was a very important Kaurna woman from the Clare district. She was married to Ityamai-itpina, who was also known as "King Rodney." He was a key leader who talked with the new European settlers.

Charlotte (Tangkaira) played a big part in helping to bring back the Kaurna language. She wrote one of the earliest examples of the Kaurna language ever written down. This was a letter from school children to Governor Gawler in 1841. In the letter, the children asked the Governor to keep working in his role. Her efforts helped future generations learn and use the Kaurna language again.
