Hyacinth Gabriel Tungutalum (born August 14, 1946 – died April 7, 2009) was an important Australian politician. He made history as the first Indigenous Australian person to be elected to the Northern Territory parliament. This was a big step for Indigenous people in Australian politics.

Early Political Career
Hyacinth Tungutalum was a traditional owner from the Tiwi Islands. These islands are located north of Darwin. In 1974, he was elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly.
He became a member for the Electoral division of Tiwi area. He was part of the Country Liberal Party (CLP). Mr. Tungutalum served in parliament until 1977. He then decided to retire from politics.
Involvement in Sports
Beyond politics, Tungutalum loved Australian rules football. He was very active in the sport on the Tiwi Islands. For many years, he served as the President of the Tiwi Islands Football League.
In 1995, he received a special award. The ATSIC gave him the National Administrator of the Year Award. This award recognized his great work and dedication to the sport.
Later Life
Hyacinth Tungutalum passed away in 2009. He died from a heart attack. His legacy as a pioneering Indigenous politician and sports leader continues.
