Hyejong of Goryeo (born 912 – died October 23, 945) was the second king of the Goryeo dynasty in Korea. His personal name was Wang Mu. He became king after his father, King Taejo. After Hyejong, King Jeongjong took the throne.
Early Life of Hyejong
Hyejong was born in 912. His father was King Taejo, the first king of Goryeo. His mother was Queen Janghwa. She was the daughter of a local official in Naju. King Taejo met and married her when he was a general.
In 921, Hyejong was named Crown Prince. This meant he was chosen to be the next king. General Bak Sul-Hui strongly supported him. Soon after, Hyejong joined his father in battles. He helped win many important victories against Later Baekje. In 943, his father King Taejo passed away. Hyejong then became the new king.
Hyejong's Time as King
Hyejong's time as king was short. It was also a difficult period. Many of King Taejo's sons wanted power. This led to disagreements and rivalries.
Two of his half-brothers, Prince Wang Yo and Prince Wang So, planned to take the throne. Their mother's family was very powerful. A loyal official named Wang Gyu told Hyejong about their plans. However, Hyejong did not act quickly. Because of this, Wang Gyu then thought about putting his own grandson on the throne. This grandson was another of Hyejong's younger half-brothers.
The End of Hyejong's Reign
Hyejong died in 945, after ruling for only two years. He had a skin condition that caused red, itchy patches. He also had trouble breathing. He passed away in his bath.
Even though Hyejong had a son who was named Crown Prince, he was not the next king. Instead, his third brother, Wang Yo, took the throne by force. Wang Yo had the support of their fourth brother, Wang So. Wang Yo then became King Jeongjong.
