The easy yellow-faced bee (Hylaeus facilis) is a special kind of bee. It lives only in Hawaii. This bee is found in just two places there. In 2016, it became the first bee in the United States to get special protection. This happened under a law called the Endangered Species Act. Six other Hawaiian yellow-faced bee species also got this protection.

What Does It Look Like?

The easy yellow-faced bee is a medium-sized bee. It has wings that look a bit smoky. Male bees have a bright yellow spot on their lower face. They also have a yellow stripe near their eyes. Female bees of this species are all black.

Where Does It Live?

Today, the easy yellow-faced bee lives in only two places. One place is a coastal area on the island of Molokai. The other is a wet forest on the island of Oahu. We don't know exactly how many bees are left.

Why Is It Endangered?

Many things threaten the easy yellow-faced bee.

  • Its home is being damaged by plants and animals that are not native to Hawaii.
  • Other insects that are not native to Hawaii hunt these bees.
  • Wildfires can destroy their habitat.
  • Changes in the climate also make it harder for them to survive.
