First Grandeur: The Beginning (1986–1992)
The first Hyundai Grandeur came out in 1986. Hyundai worked with another car company, Mitsubishi Motors, to create this car. It was similar to Mitsubishi's Debonair car.
Second Grandeur: The New Look (1992–1998)
The New Grandeur was also made with help from Mitsubishi Motors. Mitsubishi provided the engine parts, while Hyundai designed the outside and inside of the car. This version of the car started being made in September 1992 and production stopped in 1998.
Third Grandeur: Going Solo (1998–2005)
The Grandeur XG was special because Hyundai designed it all by themselves this time! It used the same base parts and engines as the Kia Amanti car. In North America and Europe, people knew it as the Hyundai XG.
When it first came out, the XG300 had a 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder engine. In 2002, the engine size got bigger to 3.5 liters, so they changed the name to XG350.
Fourth Grandeur: The Azera Era (2006–Present)
This version, called the Grandeur TG, was sold as the Hyundai Azera in North America. It's a large sedan that was introduced for the 2006 model year. It shares many parts with the mid-size Hyundai Sonata.
The Azera was considered a step up from the Sonata. It was one of the most fancy cars Hyundai sold outside of Korea. The basic model of the 2006 Hyundai Azera started at about US$24,995. It came with a 3.8-liter, 6-cylinder engine, an automatic gearbox, and features like cruise control and automatic air-conditioning. It also had safety features like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and several airbags.
There was also a more equipped version called the Limited trim. This one added cool things like 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, leather seats, and a power sunshade for the back window. This version cost about US$27,495.
Awards
The Hyundai Azera won an award in 2006. It was named "Best New Family Car (over CAN$35,000)" in the Canadian Car of the Year awards.
