Early Life and Career

Héctor Alterio was born in the Chacarita neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. His parents had moved to Argentina from Italy.

His acting journey began in 1948 with a stage play called Cómo ... en primavera ("How to ... in Spring"). After he graduated from drama school, he started his own theater company called Nuevo Teatro ("New Theatre") in 1950. He worked there for 18 years and helped bring new and exciting ideas to the Argentine theater world in the 1960s.

Alterio also became a movie star. His first film was Todo sol es amargo [es] (Every Sun is Bitter) in 1965. During the 1970s, he acted in some of Argentina's most important movies, like La Patagonia rebelde (The Rebel Patagonia). This film was so good it won a special award called the Silver Bear at a famous film festival in Berlin, Germany.

Moving to Spain

In 1975, while Alterio was working in Spain, he received serious threats because of his political beliefs. At that time, Argentina was going through a difficult political period. For his safety, he decided it was best not to return to Argentina. He stayed in Spain and became a Spanish citizen.
