Íñigo López de Mendoza y Mendoza

Íñigo López de Mendoza y Mendoza (born in 1512 – died in Mondéjar, April 21, 1580) was an important Spanish noble, soldier, diplomat, and politician. He worked for King Philip II of Spain.

About Íñigo López de Mendoza

Íñigo inherited important titles from his father, Luis Hurtado de Mendoza y Pacheco. He became the 4th Count of Tendilla and the 3rd Marquis of Mondéjar. He also held the high military position of 3rd and last Captain General of Granada. His mother was Catalina de Mendoza.

Íñigo married María de Mendoza. She was the daughter of a very powerful noble, Íñigo López de Mendoza, 4th Duke of the Infantado. This marriage connected him to an even more influential family.

Military and Diplomatic Roles

In 1555, Íñigo became a top commander for Spain. He led both land and sea forces. His mission was to help the cities of Oran and Bugía. These cities were under attack by the Turkish army.

In 1560, he served as the Spanish Ambassador in Rome. An ambassador is a country's official representative in another country. His job was to handle important talks between Spain and the Pope.

The Morisco Revolt

Íñigo played a key role in the early parts of the Morisco Revolt. This was a major uprising in Spain. He led Spanish troops alongside Luis Fajardo, 2nd Marquis of los Vélez.

He led a very successful military campaign. Even with heavy snow and freezing cold, he fought many battles. He kept pushing the enemy and won many victories. The Moriscos quickly lost hope and wanted to surrender. By February 1569, the rebellion was almost over.

Despite his great success, Íñigo was replaced in 1570 by Juan de Austria.

Later Political Career

After the rebellion ended, Íñigo continued his important work. In 1572, he became the viceroy of Valencia. A viceroy is like a governor who rules a region or country as the king's representative.

Later, in 1575, he became the Viceroy of Naples. This was another very important position.
