About Pedro de Toledo Osorio
Pedro was the son of García de Toledo Osorio, who was the 4th Marquess of Villafranca. His mother was Vittoria Colonna di Paliano. She was also the niece of a famous poet named Vittoria Colonna.
Military and Leadership Roles
Pedro de Toledo Osorio had a successful career in the military and in government. He was the Commander-in-chief of an army in Naples. Later, in 1621, he became the General of Cavalry for Spain. This meant he was in charge of all the horse soldiers.
His excellent work as the Governor of Milan was recognized with the special title of Grandeza de España in 1623. This title showed his high status and importance in Spain.
In 1625, Pedro played a key role in defending the city of Cádiz in Spain. An Anglo-Dutch fleet, led by Sir Edward Cecil, attacked Cádiz. Pedro helped to successfully protect the city from this attack.
Protecting the Coasts
Around 1610, many Spanish people called moriscos were expelled from Spain. This led to more attacks by the Ottoman navy in the western Mediterranean Sea. These attacks became even more frequent when Ahmed I became the new Sultan.
To protect the coasts, Pedro Álvarez started a large project to build defenses. He worked with skilled Italian engineers. They built many fortifications and defensive structures in Italy, Spain, and even in the Caribbean in America. This helped to keep the people and lands safe from naval attacks.
