Luis Hurtado de Mendoza y Pacheco, 2nd Marquess of Mondéjar, was an important Spanish nobleman. He was born in 1489 in Mondéjar, a town in Spain, and passed away on December 19, 1566.
He was the son of Íñigo López de Mendoza y Quiñones, who was the second Count of Tendilla. Luis Hurtado de Mendoza was a key figure in Spanish history. He was the first person from the powerful House of Mendoza family to support King Charles V during a big uprising called the Revolt of the Comuneros. This was quite remarkable because his own sister, María Pacheco, and her husband, Juan López de Padilla, were actually leaders of that revolt!
Loyalty to the King
Luis Hurtado de Mendoza stayed loyal to King Charles V throughout his entire life. Because of his strong loyalty, he was given many important jobs and titles.
In 1525, he led a military attempt to take back a place called Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera. However, this attempt was not successful. Despite this, his loyalty to the king never wavered.

Over the years, Luis Hurtado de Mendoza held several very important positions in Spain:
- He became the third Count of Tendilla.
- From 1543 to 1546, he served as the Viceroy of Navarre. A Viceroy was like a governor who ruled a region in the king's name.
- From 1546 to 1559, he was the President of the Council of Indies. This council was in charge of managing Spain's colonies in the Americas.
- From 1561 to 1563, he became the President of the Council of Castile. This was one of the highest government positions in Spain, helping the king make important decisions.
Family Life
Luis Hurtado de Mendoza married Catalina Mendoza y Zúñiga. They had several children:
- Francisco Hurtado de Mendoza y Mendoza: Sadly, he passed away before his father. He drowned in a tragic event known as the La Herradura naval disaster (1562).
- Francisca Mendoza y Mendoza: She married a man named Baltasar Ladron De La Maza.
- Iñigo López de Mendoza y Mendoza: He was born in 1511 and died in 1580. He became the 3rd Marquess of Mondéjar after his father. He married Maria Mendoza Y Aragón, who was the daughter of Íñigo López de Mendoza, 4th Duke of the Infantado.
