IRS was a Canadian hip hop group from Toronto, Ontario. Their name is short for Instinctive Reaction to Struggle. They were active in the early 2000s.

IRS is best known for their album Welcome to Planet IRS, released in 2003. This album was even nominated for a Juno Award! It was considered for the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2004.

How IRS Started

The group IRS began in the late 1990s in Scarborough, a part of Toronto. It was formed by three talented people:

  • Korry "Korry Deez" Downey (a rapper)
  • Black Cat (a rapper)
  • T.R.A.C.K.S. (a music producer)

Before forming IRS, all three members were part of another hip hop group called Monolith.

Early Music and Collaborations

In their first few years, IRS released several singles. These were often on 7-inch and 12-inch records. They also toured as opening acts for the famous Canadian hip hop artist Kardinal Offishall. They even appeared on his popular song "Ol' Time Killin'".

IRS also worked with another well-known group called Rascalz. They were featured on the Rascalz song "Dun Did It". This song was part of the Rascalz's 2002 album, Reloaded.

Their Big Album: Welcome to Planet IRS

In early 2003, IRS signed a record deal with Universal Music Canada. This was a big step for the group. Later that year, they released their album Welcome to Planet IRS through this label.

The most successful song from this album was "T-Dot Anthem". "T-Dot" is a nickname for Toronto.

What Happened Next

After Welcome to Planet IRS, the group IRS did not release any more albums together. However, the members continued to make music.

  • T.R.A.C.K.S. later joined forces with another artist named Saukrates. They formed a group called Big Black Lincoln.
  • Korry Deez started releasing music as a solo artist. Both T.R.A.C.K.S. and Black Cat have sometimes worked with him on his solo projects.
