Ian Glynn went to school at the City of London School. After that, he continued his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, and also at University College London Hospital. These places helped him become the brilliant scientist he was.

A Career in Science

Ian Glynn became a Professor of Physiology at the University of Cambridge from 1986 to 1995. Physiology is the study of how living things work. Even after he stopped teaching full-time, he was still a respected professor, known as a professor emeritus.

He was also a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge starting in 1955. This means he was a senior member of the college, involved in its academic life. For a few years, from 1980 to 1986, he was even the Vice-Master of the college, which is a very important leadership role.

Important Discoveries

One of Ian Glynn's most important scientific contributions was his work on something called the sodium pump. This is a tiny but vital part of how our body's cells work, moving important substances like sodium and potassium in and out of cells. His research on the sodium pump was so significant that it led to him being chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. He also became an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, another highly respected group of experts.

Books and Legacy

Beyond his scientific research, Ian Glynn also wrote books to share his knowledge. He wrote An Anatomy of Thought: The Origin and Machinery of the Mind in 2003, which explored how our minds work. In 2010, he wrote Elegance in Science: The beauty of simplicity, which likely discussed how simple ideas can lead to big discoveries in science.

Ian Glynn married Jenifer Franklin. Her sister was Rosalind Franklin, a famous scientist who played a key role in discovering the structure of DNA.
