Ian Heath Gershengorn, born on February 21, 1967, is an American lawyer. He served as the acting top lawyer for the U.S. government under President Barack Obama. This important role is called the Solicitor General.

Ian Gershengorn's Early Life and Schooling
Growing Up and High School
Ian Gershengorn was born in New York City. He grew up near Boston. He went to a school called Roxbury Latin School.
College and Law School
He studied at Harvard University. In 1988, he earned his bachelor's degree with high honors. Later, in 1993, he earned his law degree from Harvard Law School, also with high honors.
Working for Judges
After law school, Ian Gershengorn worked for two important judges. From 1993 to 1994, he was a law clerk for Judge Amalya Lyle Kearse. She worked at the U.S. Court of Appeals. From 1994 to 1995, he worked for Justice John Paul Stevens. Justice Stevens was a judge on the Supreme Court of the United States.
Ian Gershengorn's Career as a Lawyer
Starting at the Department of Justice
From 1995 to 1997, Gershengorn worked for the United States Department of Justice. He was a special assistant to Jamie Gorelick, who was a high-ranking official there.
Working at a Law Firm
In 1997, he joined a law firm called Jenner & Block. He became a partner in the firm's legal department. He often worked on cases that went to the Supreme Court. He also helped Indian tribes with their legal cases.
Returning to the Department of Justice
In 2009, Ian Gershengorn went back to the United States Department of Justice. He became a deputy assistant attorney general. In this role, he helped oversee important legal matters. This included cases related to Guantánamo Bay and sensitive government information.
He was also known for defending President Obama's major healthcare law. This law is called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Becoming Principal Deputy Solicitor General
In August 2013, Gershengorn was named the Principal Deputy Solicitor General. This meant he was the second-in-command in the Office of the Solicitor General.
Serving as Acting Solicitor General
In June 2016, the Solicitor General, Donald B. Verrilli Jr., stepped down. Ian Gershengorn then became the acting Solicitor General. He held this important position until January 20, 2017. He resigned when President Obama's term ended.
Ian Gershengorn's Family Life
On September 1, 1996, Ian Gershengorn married Gail Felice Levine in Dallas, Texas. Gail also works as a lawyer for the United States Department of Justice. Two of his sisters are also lawyers. His father is a heart doctor, and his mother was a judge. Ian and Gail have three sons.
