Ian Alexander Walmsley is a very important scientist from Britain. He is currently the Provost of Imperial College London. This means he is a top leader at the university. He is also a professor there, focusing on Experimental Physics.
Before this, he was a senior leader and professor at the University of Oxford. He was also a special member at St Hugh's College, Oxford. Dr. Walmsley helps lead a big project called NQIT. This project is about Networked Quantum Information Technologies. It's part of the UK's plan for quantum technology. He is also a member of several important science groups. These include the Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society. Starting in October 2025, he will become the Director of the Oxford Quantum Institute.

Early Life and Education
Ian Walmsley studied at two well-known universities. He went to Imperial College London first. Then, he studied at The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester in the United States. His education helped him become a leading expert.
Scientific Discoveries and Awards
Dr. Walmsley has made many important contributions to science. In 2011, he received the Joseph F. Keithley Award. This award is for big steps forward in how we measure things. In 2012, he became a member of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group of scientists.
He was chosen for his work in quantum optics and ultrafast optics. Quantum optics looks at how light and tiny particles interact. Ultrafast optics deals with extremely short bursts of light. He also helped create a special method called SPIDER. This method helps scientists understand light waves better.
Leadership Roles
In March 2018, it was announced that Dr. Walmsley would become the Provost of Imperial College London. He took on this big role on September 1, 2018. He followed another famous physicist, James Stirling. As Provost, he helps guide the university's research and teaching.
Quantum Computing Work
In October 2019, Dr. Walmsley helped start a company called ORCA Computing. This company works on Quantum Computing. Quantum computing uses the strange rules of quantum physics to solve problems. ORCA Computing uses Optical Fibre and quantum memory for its work. This could lead to super-fast computers in the future.
