Icelandic Children's Book Prize facts for kids
The Icelandic Children's Book Prize (or Íslensku barnabókaverðlaunin) is a special award given out each year in Iceland. It celebrates fantastic new books written for children and young people. This prize looks for stories that haven't been published yet, or for wonderful illustrated children's books that came out the year before.
About the Icelandic Children's Book Prize
This important prize was started in 1985. It was created by a writer named Ármann Kr. Einarsson and a publishing company called Vaka-Helgafell. They wanted to encourage more great children's books in Iceland.
A special group called Verðlaunasjóði íslenskra barnabóka gives out the award. They decide if there are enough really good books to choose a winner each year. If a book wins, it gets published by Vaka-Helgafell (which is now part of Forlagið) in the autumn. This means more kids get to read the winning story!
Sometimes, two books are so good that they both win the prize in the same year. This happened in 1995 and again in 2006. Other times, if no entry is strong enough, the prize is not awarded for that year.
