Ichiro Hosotani (細谷 一郎, Hosotani Ichirō, born January 21, 1946) is a former Japanese football player. He played as a forward and was known for his time with Mitsubishi Motors and the Japan national team.

Playing for Clubs

Ichiro Hosotani was born in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, on January 21, 1946. He loved football from a young age. After finishing his studies at Waseda University, he joined a professional team called Mitsubishi Motors in 1969.

Early Success with Mitsubishi Motors

His first year with Mitsubishi Motors was amazing! The team won the league championship. They also won the Emperor's Cup in 1971, which is another big football competition in Japan.

Winning More Titles

In 1973, Hosotani's team had another fantastic year. They won both the Japan Soccer League and the Emperor's Cup again. This showed how strong the team was and how important he was to their success.

A Golden Year: 1978

The year 1978 was truly special for Ichiro Hosotani and Mitsubishi Motors. They achieved a rare "treble" by winning all three major Japanese football titles:

  • The Japan Soccer League
  • The JSL Cup
  • The Emperor's Cup

This was a huge accomplishment! After this incredible season, Hosotani decided to retire from club football at the end of 1978. During his career with Mitsubishi Motors, he played in 140 league games and scored 58 goals.

On July 13, 1978, when he was 32 years old, he made his first appearance for the Japan national team. His debut match was against the Iraq team.
