The Story of Icononzo
Early Days and Founding
Icononzo has a long history. In 1875, a community called Guamitos was inherited by Don Vicente Reyes Daza.
Later, around 1888, several people like Adrian Lords Escobar and Guillermo Quijano arrived. They started a small community along the road to Guamitos. On July 16, 1888, this community officially became a "Corregimiento Icononzo." A corregimiento is like a local district or a small administrative area.
Growing into a Municipality
By 1892, Don Reyes Daza and Alberto Williamson began setting up large farms called estates. These estates were named Canada and Scotland. There weren't enough homes for all the workers in the area.
To solve this problem, the farm owners decided to donate land. This allowed 17 new homes to be built. This led to the formation of a new town. Because the town grew and became more important, it was upgraded to a "municipality." A municipality is a larger, self-governing area, similar to a city or county. This happened on April 21, 1915. At that time, Icononzo was returned to the Tolima Department after being part of the Cundinamarca Department.
The Natural Bridge
Icononzo is famous for its natural bridge. This bridge is made of rock and stretches over a very deep canyon. In the 19th century, an Italian painter named Gerolamo Fumagalli painted this impressive natural arch.
The natural bridge was also used during a time of civil unrest in Colombia. This period is known as La Violencia, which happened after an event called the Bogotazo. People used the bridge during these difficult times.
A New Community Arrives
In 1989, a group called the Atlantis commune moved near Icononzo. This group was originally founded in Ireland.
