Ida of Boulogne (born around 1160, died 1216) was an important noblewoman. She was the Countess of Boulogne in her own right, meaning she ruled the area herself. She held this title from 1173 until her death.
Ida's Early Life
Ida was the older daughter of Matthew of Alsace and Marie I, Countess of Boulogne. Her grandparents on her mother's side were King Stephen of England and Matilda I of Boulogne.
Ida's mother, Marie, was a nun. Her marriage to Matthew was quite unusual and later ended. In 1170, their marriage was officially cancelled.
Becoming Countess of Boulogne
Ida's father, Matthew, continued to rule Boulogne until he passed away in 1173. After his death, Ida became the Countess. This meant she was now in charge of the County of Boulogne.
Ida's Marriages and Family
Following advice from her uncle, Philip I, Count of Flanders, Ida married Gerard of Guelders in 1181. Sadly, Gerard died in the same year.
She then married Berthold IV, Duke of Zähringen. He passed away in 1186.
In 1190, Ida married Count Renaud de Dammartin. Together, Ida and Renaud had a daughter named Matilda II of Boulogne. Matilda II later became Countess of Boulogne herself.
