Ide is a friendly village located in Devon, England. It's found just under one mile southwest of the larger city of Exeter. The village is known for its peaceful atmosphere and local history.
About Ide Village
Ide is mostly separated from the busy suburbs of Exeter by the A30 dual carriageway. This major road acts like a bypass, which has helped Ide keep its own unique identity. Even though the road was a bit controversial when it was built, it has allowed the village to stay independent. Some important buildings, like Ide House and the Twisted Oak pub, are actually on the Exeter side of the A30, but they are still part of Ide parish.
The village has two local pubs where people can gather: the Poacher's Inn and the Huntsman Inn. To the northwest of the village, along College Lane, you'll find a ford. A ford is a shallow place where a river or stream can be crossed by walking or driving through the water. This one crosses the Fordland Brook.
History of Ide
The village church in Ide is very old. It is named after a German saint called Ida of Herzfeld. The church building was rebuilt in 1834, but its history goes back much further.
Roman History
High above Ide, on a hilltop, you can find the site of an ancient Roman fortlet or signal station. This was a small military outpost used by the Romans. It might have been used to watch for enemies or to send signals across the land. This site is located at SX8888.
Railway Past
Ide once had its own train station called Ide Halt railway station. It was part of the G.W.R. Teign Valley Line. The station first opened in 1903. However, it closed to passengers on June 9, 1958. Today, the area where the station used to be has been redeveloped. It is now a place called St Ida's Close, and there are no signs left of the old railway.
Population Changes
The number of people living in Ide has changed over the years. In 2011, the village had a population of 526 residents. This number slightly decreased to 510 people in 2014. However, by 2021, the population had grown to 586 people.
