A Look Back: The Church's Story

How the Church Began

The Church of San Marcos has a long and interesting history. It started as one of six churches built by King Alfonso X of Castile. He founded these churches after he took control of the city in 1264.

Building the Church

The church you see today probably began being built in the mid-1300s. Its unique shape, like the back part called the apse, shows the Gothic style of that time. It also has a special entrance called a Mudéjar portal. This style mixes Christian and Islamic art. Some people think it might have been built on top of an older mosque.

We do not have many records about its building until the mid-1400s. At that time, it went through a big update. This renovation also used the late Gothic style, making the church even grander.

What the Church Looks Like

Outside the Church

The Church of San Marcos has three main entrances, called façades. The main entrance portal was added later, in the 1500s. This part of the church shows the Mannerist style. This style came after the Renaissance and has its own unique look.

Inside the Church

When you go inside, you will see a grand main altar. This altar was built in the 1700s and is in the Baroque style. Baroque art is known for being very detailed and dramatic.
