Igor Severyanin (real name Igor Vasilyevich Lotaryov) was a famous Russian poet. He lived from May 16, 1887, to December 20, 1941. Severyanin was known for his unique style of poetry. He was a leader of a group of poets called the Ego-Futurists.

Early Life and First Poems

Igor Severyanin was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. His father was an army engineer. Through his mother, Igor was distantly related to famous Russian writers Nikolai Karamzin and Afanasy Fet.

In 1904, Igor traveled to Harbin with his father. He later returned to St. Petersburg. There, he started publishing his first poems. He paid for these poems himself.

Becoming a Famous Poet

Igor Severyanin became very well-known around 1913. That year, he released a collection of poems called The Cup of Thunder. His pen name, Severyanin, means "Northerner" in Russian.

In one of his most famous poems, he introduced himself by saying, "I am Igor Severyanin, a genius!" Many people, especially outside the big cities, became big fans of his work.

Severyanin's Unique Style

Severyanin's poems were very unusual and exciting. He wrote about things like "ice cream of lilacs" and "pineapples in champagne." He wanted to surprise his readers with bright colors and fancy ideas. These ideas were often linked to high society.

He also admired new inventions like dirigibles (airships) and automobiles (cars). He wanted his fans to feel like his poetry was modern and new. Severyanin sometimes shocked people by saying he admired writers like Oscar Wilde. He also made bold statements about himself. At one party, his fans even called him "the king of poets."

Life After the Revolution

After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Igor Severyanin was one of the first poets to leave Russia. He moved to Estonia in 1918. He tried to go back to Russia later, but he could not. This was due to several reasons, including the Russian Civil War. He also married a local woman named Felissa Kruut.

Severyanin continued to write poetry in Estonia. He died in Tallinn in 1941 from a heart attack. Tallinn was occupied by German forces during World War II at that time. He was buried in the Alexander Nevsky cemetery in Tallinn.
