Isiah "Ike" Williams (born August 2, 1923 – died September 5, 1994) was a famous American boxer. He became the lightweight world champion. Ike won the World Lightweight Championship in April 1945. He successfully defended his title eight times. He held the championship until 1951.
Ike Williams was known for his powerful right hand. The Ring magazine listed him as one of the 100 greatest punchers ever. He was also named The Ring magazine's Fighter of the Year in 1948. Later, he was honored by being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.

Early Life of Ike Williams
Ike Williams was born in Brunswick, Georgia, on August 2, 1923. He started his professional boxing career in 1940. This was in Trenton, New Jersey.
People say that Ike worked as a newsboy. He used his fists to protect his newspaper selling spot. This is how he first learned to fight.
Ike Williams' Boxing Career
During his time as a boxer, Williams fought many top fighters. He beat former lightweight champions like Sammy Angott, Bob Montgomery, and Beau Jack.
Winning the World Lightweight Title in 1945
Ike Williams joined the U.S. Army in 1944. But he kept boxing professionally.
On April 18, 1945, Williams won the NBA World Lightweight Championship. He knocked out Juan Zurita in the second round. This big fight happened in Mexico City. About 35,000 fans watched him win.
Williams attacked Zurita's head with both fists. Zurita couldn't defend himself. After the fight, fans rushed the ring. Police had to clear the area for Williams to leave.
Defending the Title Against Bob Montgomery
One of Williams' most important title defenses was against Bob Montgomery. Montgomery was the NYSAC Lightweight Champion. On August 4, 1947, Williams knocked him out in the sixth round. This win made Williams the undisputed World Lightweight Champion.
Montgomery was knocked down by a strong right punch from Williams. He tried to get up but couldn't keep fighting. This victory also made up for a loss Williams had to Montgomery in 1944.
Title Defense Against Jesse Flores
On September 23, 1948, Williams defended his Lightweight title again. He fought Jesse Flores at Yankee Stadium in New York. Williams won by a technical knockout in the tenth round.
Flores was knocked down five times during the fight. The final punches were a left hook and a right hand. These sent Flores to the mat.
Title Defense Against Enrique Bolanos
Williams defended his title against Enrique Bolanos on July 21, 1949. Nearly 19,000 fans watched at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles. Williams won with a technical knockout in the fourth round.
Bolanos was knocked down twice. The referee, Jack Dempsey, stopped the fight. Bolanos' manager also threw in the towel.
Title Defense Against Freddy Dawson
On December 5, 1949, Williams fought Freddy Dawson. It was a close fifteen-round fight in Philadelphia. Williams won by a decision from the judges. He had beaten Dawson twice before.
The judges thought Williams won by just one round. The referee scored it more clearly for Williams. There were no knockdowns in this fight.
People were already worried about Williams' weight. This issue would come up again later. Williams was fined for telling the press about a possible bribe. He should have told the boxing commission first.
Ike Williams also fought Johnny Bratton twice. On January 17, 1949, Williams won easily. He had taken a break to heal a broken hand. On January 20, 1950, Williams won again. He caused Bratton to have a broken jaw. Williams was far ahead on points when the fight ended.
Losing the World Lightweight Title
Ike Williams held his championship until May 25, 1951. He lost to Jimmy Carter at Madison Square Garden. Carter stopped Williams in the fourteenth round.
Williams was knocked down four times in the fight. He believed that struggling to make weight made him weaker.
For some of his career, Williams was managed by Frank "Blinky" Palermo. Palermo was thought to have connections to organized crime. Williams said that Palermo cheated him out of his share of the money from fights.
Ike Williams Testifies to Congress
In 1961, Ike Williams spoke to Congress. He talked about unfair practices in boxing. Williams said that boxers were often asked to take bribes. He also said he was stopped from fighting when he tried to manage himself. He couldn't get fights unless he had a manager from the managers' group.
Williams explained that he didn't get his full share of money from two fights. These were against Jesse Flores and Beau Jack in 1948. He was owed a lot of money from these fights. He had asked the boxing association to hold the money for taxes. But his manager took it, saying he had financial problems. Williams still had to pay taxes on money he never received.
He also told Congress that his manager was offered $30,000 for him to lose a fight against Freddy Dawson in 1949. Williams refused the bribe. He heard that if he didn't win by knockout, the judges would give the fight to Dawson. Williams won the fight. He told the media about the rumor. He thought the judges changed their minds after he spoke out. But he was fined $500 for telling the media first.
Williams also remembered a fight against Kid Gavilán in 1949. He was offered $100,000 to lose that fight. Again, Williams refused. He later regretted it because he lost the fight anyway. Many reporters thought Williams should have won. This made him think the judges might have been influenced.
Williams believed he also lost his lightweight title to Jimmy Carter unfairly. He was offered $50,000 to lose that fight. He regretted not taking the money because he lost anyway.
Williams said he never took bribes because many people were counting on him. His friends had bet their hard-earned money on him.
Death
Ike Williams passed away on September 5, 1994. He died at his home in Los Angeles from natural causes.
