The International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) is a special place in Canastota, New York. It celebrates the best boxers, their coaches, and other people who have helped the sport grow around the world. It's like a museum where you can learn about boxing's amazing history.
The idea for the IBHOF started in the 1980s. Local people, including Ed Brophy, wanted to honor boxing champions from their village, like Carmen Basilio and Billy Backus. The museum first opened its doors in 1989. Today, boxing fans from all over the world come to visit and see its exhibits.
Before the IBHOF, there was another Hall of Fame started in 1954 by The Ring magazine. It was located in New York City. That Hall of Fame closed in 1987, after honoring 155 people. Most of those boxing legends have also been welcomed into the IBHOF. Since 2020, the IBHOF has also started to include amazing female boxers.
The IBHOF is one of the most well-known boxing halls of fame. It holds special ceremonies every year, usually on the second Sunday in June. Many famous boxers and celebrities attend these events. The ceremonies were postponed in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Artist Richard T. Slone has been the official artist since 1997, creating portraits of the new members.
How Boxers Get Chosen
To be chosen for the International Boxing Hall of Fame, professional boxers must have retired from fighting at least three years ago. A group of boxing writers and historians from around the world vote for the new members. They pick people based on different categories:
- Modern Boxers: These are boxers whose last fight was in 1989 or later.
- Old Timers: This group is now split into two parts:
- Early Era: Boxers who fought from 1893 (when the Marquis of Queensbury Rules started) until 1942.
- Late Era: Boxers who fought from 1943 to 1988.
- Pioneers: These are boxers whose last fight was in 1892 or earlier. They often fought before the modern boxing rules were set.
- Observers: This category includes people like journalists, historians, writers, and artists who have shared boxing stories.
- Non-Participants: These are people who helped boxing in other ways, not as fighters or writers. This could be trainers, promoters, or referees.
