George Dixon (born July 29, 1870 – died January 6, 1908) was a famous Canadian professional boxer. He made history in 1892 when he won the bantamweight title. This made him the first black athlete ever to win a world championship in any sport. He was also the first boxing champion born in Canada.
Many experts consider Dixon one of the best boxers of all time. Ring Magazine founder Nat Fleischer even ranked him as the number one featherweight boxer ever. George Dixon was honored for his achievements many times. He was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1955. He also joined the Ring Magazine Hall of Fame in 1956. In 1990, he was one of the first people to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2018, he was recognized as one of the top 15 athletes in Nova Scotia's history, ranking sixth.

George Dixon's Boxing Journey
George Dixon was born in a community called Africville in Halifax, Nova Scotia. People knew him by his nickname, "Little Chocolate." He was not a very tall boxer, standing about 5 feet 3.5 inches (1.613 m) (about 1.61 meters) tall. When he started his professional boxing career, he weighed only 87 pounds (39 kg) (about 39.5 kilograms). Dixon is often given credit for inventing shadowboxing, a way boxers practice by themselves.
Becoming a World Champion
Dixon first claimed the world bantamweight title on May 10, 1888. This happened after a fight with Tommy Spider Kelly. He officially became the champion two years later. On June 27, 1890, he knocked out Nunc Wallace of England in 18 rounds.
The next year, on May 31, 1891, Dixon won another world title. He beat Cal McCarthy in 22 rounds to become the world featherweight champion. While he held this title, Dixon also created a traveling show. He called it the "George Dixon Specialty Co." This show toured across Canada and the United States.
Losing and Regaining Titles
On October 4, 1897, George Dixon lost his featherweight title. He was defeated by Solly Smith in a rematch. Dixon had beaten Smith before with a technical knockout.
He later fought Ben Jordan, the British featherweight champion, on July 1, 1898. The fight was very close and went for 25 rounds. Many people thought it should have been a draw. Even though Dixon fought hard, the referee gave the win to Jordan.
Dixon then aimed to fight Solly Smith again. But Smith lost his world title to Dave Sullivan in a surprise upset. So, Dixon decided to challenge the new champion, Sullivan. On November 11, 1898, Dixon won back the world featherweight title. He beat Sullivan in the tenth round by disqualification. Sullivan had only been champion for 46 days.
The Fight Against Dave Sullivan
Before the fight with Sullivan, many people thought Dixon would win. For nine rounds, Dixon was clearly doing better. In the final round, Sullivan's brother walked into the ring twice. He kept talking to the referee, Jimmy Coville. This made the referee so frustrated that he stopped the fight. Sullivan was disqualified, and Dixon won. Sullivan probably would have lost anyway, but the referee's decision ended it early.
Later Career and Legacy
George Dixon lost his featherweight title on October 28, 1901, to Abe Attell. Some records say he lost it earlier, on January 9, 1900, to Terry McGovern.
Later in his life, Dixon moved to Boston, where some of his family lived. Many other people from Africville also moved there. George Dixon passed away on January 6, 1908, in a hospital in New York City. He had been very ill. His hospital bills were partly paid for by a charity boxing tournament held in his honor. He is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Boston, Massachusetts.
Today, a recreation and community center in Halifax is named after him. In 2021, the Canadian government recognized George Dixon as a National Historic Person. This means he is considered a very important figure in Canada's history.
