Holly Rene Holm (born October 17, 1981) is an American mixed martial artist. She used to compete in the Bantamweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). She was once the Women's Bantamweight Champion.
Before MMA, Holm was a professional boxer. She won many world titles and defended them 18 times in three different weight classes. Ring magazine named her "Fighter of the Year" twice (2005, 2006). Experts at BoxRec rank her as one of the greatest female boxers ever.
One of her most famous wins in MMA was at UFC 193 on November 15, 2015. She won the bantamweight title by beating Ronda Rousey, who had never lost before. This fight is seen as one of the biggest upsets in combat sports history. Holly Holm is the only fighter to win a major world title in both professional boxing and mixed martial arts.

Early Life and Family
Holly Holm was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is the youngest of three children. Her father, Roger, is a Church of Christ preacher. This is why Holly was nicknamed "The Preacher's Daughter" when she became a fighter. Her mother, Tammy, works as a massage therapist. Holly's family background is mainly Irish.
When she was growing up, Holly played soccer. She also did gymnastics, swimming, and diving. Her parents separated before she finished Manzano High School in 2000. After high school, she studied for a year at the University of New Mexico.
Amateur Kickboxing Journey
Holly Holm started her journey into fighting with aerobics classes when she was 16. Her cardio-kickboxing teacher, Mike Winkeljohn, saw that Holly had a lot of talent. He then started training her to be a fighter.
In September 2001, Holly won a championship title. This was at the International Rules Adult Women's Welterweight Division. It was part of the International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) USA National Amateur Championship Tournament in Kansas City. She had two fights in this tournament. She won her first fight very quickly by technical knockout. Her second fight was won by a unanimous decision from the judges. This was Holly's last amateur competition. Her total amateur kickboxing record was 6 wins, 0 losses, and 2 draws.
Professional Boxing Career
Holly Holm held several welterweight boxing titles. Many people thought she was one of the best female welterweights in the world. Some even consider her one of the greatest boxers of all time. Ring Magazine named her the female Fighter of the Year twice in a row, in 2005 and 2006. She was very popular in her hometown of Albuquerque. Most of her fights happened there, with only one outside of New Mexico.
In June 2008, she became the undisputed welterweight champion. She held belts from 140 to 154 pounds after beating former champ Mary Jo Sanders. They had a second fight on October 17, 2008, which ended in a draw.
On December 2, 2011, Holly fought Anne Sophie Mathis from France. Mathis was known for her powerful knockouts. Holly was badly beaten and lost by knockout in the 7th round. This was called the "upset of the year" in women's boxing. They fought again on June 15, 2012. This time, Holly won by a unanimous decision, becoming the new champion and getting revenge for her earlier loss.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Starting Her MMA Journey

Holly was supposed to have her first UFC fight at UFC 181 against Raquel Pennington. However, she had to pull out due to an injury. The two fighters eventually met at UFC 184. Holly won the fight by a split decision.
Holly then fought Marion Reneau on July 15, 2015. Holly won this fight by a unanimous decision.
Holm vs. Rousey: The Big Upset
Holly Holm's most famous MMA fight was against the champion Ronda Rousey. They fought at UFC 193 on November 14, 2015. Even though many people thought Holly would lose, she controlled most of the fight with her striking. She also stopped all of Rousey's attempts to take her down.
Holly won the fight by knockout in the second round with a high kick. This ended Rousey's undefeated streak and her three-year reign as champion. After the fight, Rousey had to go to the hospital.
Holly earned extra money for "Fight of the Night" and "Performance of the Night." By winning the title, she became the first person to win championships in both boxing and MMA. UFC fighter Jon Jones said he thought Holly was "already the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) of women's combat sports." Her hometown, Albuquerque, even declared November "Holly Holm Month."
After the Championship
In her first title defense, Holly lost to Miesha Tate in the fifth round on March 5, 2016, at UFC 196. Tate defeated Holly with a rear-naked choke. Holly fought well in the first round, but Tate was better at grappling on the ground. In the fifth round, Tate took Holly down again and used another rear-naked choke. Holly refused to give up, but she became unconscious, and the referee stopped the fight.
Holly then faced Valentina Shevchenko on July 23, 2016. She lost this fight by a unanimous decision.
Challenging for the Featherweight Title
Holly Holm fought Germaine de Randamie at UFC 208 for the first-ever UFC Women's Featherweight Championship on February 11, 2017. She lost the fight by a unanimous decision. During the fight, de Randamie hit Holly after the bell sounded at the end of two rounds. Many fans and media thought Holly should have won. Holly asked for a review, but the decision was not changed.
Later Fights
After losing the featherweight title fight, Holly returned to the bantamweight division. She faced Bethe Correia on June 17, 2017. Holly won the fight by knockout in the third round with a head kick and a punch. This win earned her another "Performance of the Night" bonus.
Holly then challenged Cris Cyborg for the UFC Featherweight Championship on December 30, 2017. She lost the fight by a unanimous decision. This fight earned Holly her second "Fight of the Night" bonus.
Holly faced Megan Anderson on June 9, 2018. She won the fight by a unanimous decision.
On March 20, it was reported that Holly signed a new six-fight contract with the UFC.
Holly fought Amanda Nunes for the Women's bantamweight championship on July 6, 2019. She lost the fight in the first round after being hit by a head kick and punches.
Holly was scheduled to fight Raquel Pennington again on October 6, 2019. However, Holly had to withdraw due to a hamstring injury, and the fight was canceled. They were rescheduled to fight on January 18, 2020, at UFC 246. Holly won the fight by a unanimous decision.

Holly faced Yana Santos on March 25, 2023. She won the fight by a unanimous decision.
Holly then fought Mayra Bueno Silva on July 15, 2023. She lost the fight in the second round. However, the result was later changed to a "No Contest" because Bueno Silva had an issue with a pre-fight test.
Holly's last fight was against Kayla Harrison on April 13, 2024, at UFC 300. She lost the fight in the second round. On January 13, 2025, Holly left the UFC at her own request.
Fighting Style
Holly Holm moves a lot from side to side in the ring. She uses quick jabs to hit her opponent's head. When she is close to her opponent, she often waits to hit back with counter-strikes, usually a straight left punch. Holly is also known for her punching combinations, especially when her opponents are against the cage.
Another famous boxer, Ana Julaton, said Holly is a "natural mover." She noted that Holly's footwork helps her set up her strikes. At UFC 193, Ronda Rousey struggled to get close to Holly because of her movement. Holly uses different kinds of kicks. She often aims for the body with a fast side kick. She can push back an opponent with a low kick or attack the head with a left high kick.
