Jeremiah "Joe" Jeannette (August 26, 1879 – July 2, 1958) was an amazing American boxer. Many people thought he was one of the very best heavyweight boxers in the early 1900s. A heavyweight boxer is usually one of the biggest and strongest fighters.
Because of the unfair rules at the time, Joe Jeannette, who was African-American, was not allowed to fight for the main world heavyweight title. However, he did win the important World Colored Heavyweight Championship twice!

Joe Jeannette's Early Life
Joe Jeannette was born on August 26, 1879. His hometown was West Hoboken, New Jersey, which is now part of Union City. His parents were Mena and Benjamin F. Jeanette. His dad worked as a blacksmith, making things out of metal.
Joe started out helping his father. Later, he drove a coal truck. In 1904, when he was 25 years old, Joe began his boxing career. He started boxing after someone dared him to try it! His first fight was in Jersey City. Joe was about 5 ft 10 in (1.78 m) tall and weighed around 190 lb (86 kg). He was strong and learned how to fight from street brawls when he was younger.
Joe's Amazing Boxing Career
Within just two years, Joe Jeannette was known as one of the top black heavyweight boxers in the United States. Joe learned a lot from another great boxer named Sam Langford. Joe and Sam fought each other 15 times! Joe became very good at defending himself and dodging punches. Other boxers thought Joe was a tough opponent. Not many wanted to fight him!
Because of the unfair racial barriers back then, black boxers like Joe had fewer people they could fight. This meant they often fought the same opponents many times.
Battling Jack Johnson
Joe Jeannette fought the famous boxer Jack Johnson ten times in total. Johnson later became the first African-American Heavyweight Champion of the World. In their fights, Joe lost twice, won one fight because of a foul, and had two draws. Five of their fights ended with "No Decisions," meaning no official winner was declared.
Jack Johnson himself said that Joe Jeannette was "the toughest man I ever fought."
After Jack Johnson won the world heavyweight title in 1908, he never fought Joe Jeannette again. Joe and many others in the African-American community were upset by this. Joe Jeannette said that Jack "forgot about his old friends" and wouldn't fight other black boxers after he became champion.
Even though Joe Jeannette had a fantastic record against boxers of all races, he was never given a chance to fight for the main heavyweight championship during his 15-year career.
The Longest Fight of the Century
Joe's most famous fight happened on April 17, 1909. He fought Sam McVey in Paris, France. This fight was incredibly long, lasting three and a half hours and 49 rounds! It was the longest boxing match of the 20th century.
Sam McVey started the fight very strong. He knocked Joe Jeannette down 27 times! In the 16th round, McVey almost knocked Joe out. But by the 19th round, McVey started to get tired. Joe then took over the fight. He knocked McVey down 19 times! After the 49th round, McVey was too tired to stand up. Joe Jeannette won the fight by a technical knockout. This big win earned him the "World Colored Heavyweight Championship."
Joe Jeannette stopped boxing in 1919 when he was 40 years old. He had 166 official professional fights. He won 106 of them, with 68 wins by knockout! He only lost 20 fights, and only two of those were by knockout. Joe is remembered as one of the best boxers of his time, right up there with Jack Johnson, Sam Langford, and Sam McVey.
Joe also appeared in a movie called Square Joe in 1921.
Joe's Family Life
Joe Jeannette met his wife, Adelaide, at a dance in Hoboken. They had two children together: a son named Joe Jr. and a daughter named Agnes.
Life After Boxing
Unlike many boxers who spent all their money, Joe Jeannette was smart with his earnings. He invested his money wisely. After he stopped fighting, he became a boxing referee and a trainer for young boxers.
Joe owned a boxing gym in Union City, New Jersey. He spent many years there, teaching hundreds of boxers. One of his students even became a Heavyweight Champion, James J. Braddock!
Joe loved cars. He eventually changed his boxing gym into a garage. From there, he ran a business renting out limousines. Later, he started a taxi company. He named the taxi company Adelaide, after his wife.
Joe Jeannette passed away in 1958. He is buried in Fairview, New Jersey.
In 1997, Joe Jeannette was honored by being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. This means he is recognized as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
On April 17, 2009, a special historical marker was placed in Union City. It stands where Joe Jeannette's home and gym used to be. It was the first historical marker ever put up in Union City!
