Samuel Edgar Langford (March 4, 1886 – January 12, 1956) was a famous Black Canadian boxer. He was known by cool nicknames like "The Boston Tar Baby," "Boston Terror," and "Boston Bonecrusher." Many boxing experts believe Langford was one of the greatest fighters of all time. ESPN even called him the "Greatest Fighter Nobody Knows."
Sam Langford was from Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia, a small town in Canada. He was about 5 feet 6.5 inches tall. In his best years, he weighed around 185 pounds. Langford fought in many different weight classes. He fought from lightweight all the way up to heavyweight. He beat many world champions and famous boxers of his time. Langford was a very powerful puncher, even against much bigger heavyweights. The Ring magazine ranked him as the second-best puncher ever. One boxing historian said Langford had the experience of James Toney and the punching power of Mike Tyson.
Sadly, Langford was not allowed to fight for many world championships. This was because of the "colour bar," which was a rule that stopped Black boxers from competing for certain titles. Also, Jack Johnson, the first African-American World Heavyweight Champion, refused to fight Langford again. Langford won the World Colored Heavyweight Championship a record five times. This title was for Black boxers. He also beat the Lightweight Champion Joe Gans in a fight that wasn't for a title. Many people think Langford is the best boxer who never won a major world title. In 2020, the WBC made him an honorary world champion. BoxRec ranks him as the 22nd greatest Canadian boxer ever.

Early Life and Boxing Start
Sam Langford was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. His grandfather was a former slave from the USA. He helped start the community of Weymouth Falls. When Sam was young, he left home because his father was abusive. He traveled to Boston and found a job. He worked as a janitor at a boxing gym called the Lenox Athletic Club.
It wasn't long before Sam started training there. He quickly got better at boxing. At just 15 years old, he won the amateur featherweight championship of Boston.
Sam Langford's Professional Boxing Career
Langford was a boxer who fought many great athletes. He competed against fighters from the lightweight division up to the heavyweights. He beat many champions along the way. However, he was never able to win a main world title for himself. Even though Langford never got to fight for Jack Johnson's heavyweight title, the founder of Ring magazine, Nat Fleischer, called Langford one of the ten best heavyweights ever. Famous champion Jack Dempsey said that when he was a young boxer in 1916, he refused to fight Langford. Dempsey believed, "I think Sam Langford was the greatest fighter we ever had."
Important Fights and Challenges
Langford had many memorable fights. He often fought other Black boxers. These included Sam McVey, Battling Jim Johnson, Joe Jeanette, and Harry Wills. These boxers faced similar unfair barriers in their careers.
Fighting Joe Gans
On December 8, 1903, Langford defeated World Lightweight Champion Joe Gans. Langford won by a decision after 15 rounds. Gans' title was not on the line for this fight. Later, the two boxers became good friends. Langford thought Gans was the best fighter of all time, pound for pound.
Battles with Jack Blackburn
Langford fought Jack Blackburn six times. Blackburn later became the trainer of the famous boxer Joe Louis. The first three fights between Langford and Blackburn were draws. Langford won the fourth fight by decision. The fifth fight was another draw. The sixth fight was called a "no contest."
Welterweight Title Fight
Many people say Langford never fought for a world title. But he actually fought World Welterweight Champion Barbados Joe Walcott on September 5, 1904. This fight was for Walcott's title. The fight ended in a draw, so Walcott kept his title. However, many people who watched the fight said Langford clearly outscored the champion. Langford used his longer reach to keep Walcott away. He also used his quick footwork to avoid Walcott's punches. Langford landed many strong punches to Walcott's jaw. Walcott was bleeding by the second round. He continued to bleed more after every round. Walcott even fell to one knee in the third round. Langford finished the fight with hardly any scratches on himself.
The Lowell Sun newspaper wrote about the fight. They said Walcott met his match. They reported that Langford clearly outpointed the champion. They also said Walcott's aggressive style was the only thing that saved him from losing. Langford kept hitting Walcott's face, making him bleed. Langford even knocked Walcott to one knee.
World Colored Heavyweight Champion
In 1912, Langford was one of the top contenders for the World Colored Heavyweight Championship. This title was for Black boxers. He fought Sam McVey in Australia. McVey was considered one of the best Black heavyweights. Before his win, Langford stayed at the Nedlands Park Hotel. There, he showed off his amazing skills. People watched him punch the ball and spar. One person said, "Langford is as fast on his feet and as graceful as a ballet dancer. He carries a punch like unto that of a kick of a mule, and is practically impervious to punishment."
Langford won the World Colored Middleweight Championship in 1907. He beat Young Peter Jackson in a 20-round fight.
He fought heavyweight Joe Jeanette fourteen times. Langford won 8 of these fights, lost 2, and had 4 draws.

Langford fought future World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson on April 26, 1906. Langford lost this 15-round fight by decision. Johnson was 29 pounds heavier than Langford. Langford took a lot of punches and was knocked down three times. But he still lasted all 15 rounds. After winning, Johnson refused to fight Langford again. Many thought Langford was the most dangerous challenger for Johnson's title. However, Johnson said Langford could not pay his $30,000 appearance fee.
Langford fought heavyweight Fireman Jim Flynn six times. Langford won five of these fights, mostly by knockout. He lost one by decision.
Langford also fought World Middleweight Champion Stanley Ketchel on April 27, 1910. This was a six-round fight that was not for a title. It ended in a draw. A longer rematch was planned, but it never happened. Ketchel was sadly murdered six months later.
Langford fought heavyweight Battling Jim Johnson twelve times. Langford won nine of these fights and had three draws. He never lost to Battling Jim Johnson. Johnson was always much heavier than Langford.
Langford fought heavyweight Sam McVea fifteen times. Langford won 6, lost 2, and had 7 draws. In their last fight, Langford was 37 years old.
On August 15, 1911, Langford defeated former World Light Heavyweight Champion Philadelphia Jack O'Brien. Langford won by a technical knockout in the fifth round. Langford was ten pounds heavier than O'Brien. The fight stopped after a strong punch from Langford knocked O'Brien down. O'Brien had to be helped back to his corner. O'Brien later said about Langford, "When he appeared upon the scene of combat, you knew you were cooked."
Langford fought heavyweight Gunboat Smith twice. He lost the first fight by decision. Many people watching were surprised by this. Langford won the second fight by knockout in the third round.
Langford fought heavyweight Harry Wills seventeen times. Langford was 31 in their first fight. As he got older, his eyesight started to get worse. He won two fights, lost fourteen, and had two draws against Wills.
Former World Heavyweight Champion Tommy Burns was a referee in their third fight. At the end, he told Langford, "Sam, this is the hardest I ever had to do in my life. I always admired you and never thought to see you beaten, but I have to give the decision against you."
Why Sam Langford Didn't Get a World Title Shot
Sam Langford had lost to Jack Johnson only once. This was on April 26, 1906. Johnson won by a decision after fifteen rounds. Johnson was much heavier than Langford. Even though Johnson knocked Langford down three times, many people felt Langford had won the fight. Johnson sometimes seemed to play with Langford, even talking to people at ringside during the fight. After winning, Johnson kept refusing to fight Langford again. Many believed Langford was the most dangerous challenger for Johnson's title. Another reason Johnson refused was that he knew a fight between two Black boxers would not make as much money as a fight between him and a white boxer.
It was Battling Jim Johnson, whom Sam had beaten nine times, who got a title shot against Jack Johnson. Sam Langford felt he deserved that chance.
The Heavyweight Championship and Racial Barriers
Sadly, the rule that stopped boxers of color from fighting for the world heavyweight title stayed in place even when Jack Johnson was champion. After Johnson became World's Heavyweight Champion, he did not fight a Black opponent for five years. Besides Langford, he also refused to fight other Black heavyweights like Joe Jeanette and the young Harry Wills.
Black boxers were not given a chance at the title. Johnson said he could make more money fighting white boxers. In 1913, there were rumors that Johnson would fight Langford for the title in Paris. But it never happened. Johnson claimed Langford could not raise $30,000 for his payment.
Because Black boxers were usually stopped from fighting for the heavyweight championship due to racism, Johnson's refusal to fight other African-Americans upset the African-American community. It was rare for them to get a chance to fight top white boxers. Jeanette criticized Johnson, saying, "Jack forgot about his old friends after he became champion and drew the color line against his own people."
When Johnson finally agreed to fight a Black opponent in late 1913, it was not Sam Langford. Instead, Johnson chose Battling Jim Johnson. Battling Jim was not as good a boxer. He had lost to Langford and had a draw and a loss to Sam McVey.
The fight between Jack Johnson and Battling Jim Johnson was on December 19, 1913, in Paris. It was the first time two Black boxers fought for the World Heavyweight Championship. But many people thought it looked more like a practice fight. A sportswriter said the crowd got angry because neither boxer was really trying to fight. Johnson barely fought Battling Jim. It turned out Johnson had broken his arm in the third round. Battling Jim did not take advantage of this. The fight was a draw, and Jack Johnson kept his championship.
Battling Jim's next fight, four months later, was also a title match. On March 27, 1914, in New York City, Sam Langford won against Battling Jim Johnson. The New York Times said Langford "won by a wide margin." They said Johnson "failed to show anything remotely resembling championship ability."
Battling Jim fought Langford ten more times. Two of these fights were draws. Their last fight was on September 22, 1918. Battling Jim also fought Joe Jeanette five more times and never won.
Battling Jim Johnson died during the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918. He ended his career with 30 wins, 31 losses, and six draws. Looking at his poor record against the best Black heavyweights and his inability to beat a one-armed Jack Johnson, Battling Jim Johnson was not a top contender. He was supposed to fight Langford again before he died.
In 1915, Jack Johnson lost his title to Jess Willard. Because of the strong racism at the time, it would be 22 years before another African American, Joe Louis, got a chance at the Heavyweight title.
When Jack Johnson had the power to give a Black boxer a title shot, he refused to give it to Sam Langford. Many people thought Langford was the best challenger in the heavyweight division. Johnson beat Jim Jeffries but avoided Langford. He likely feared losing his title. Many consider Langford's failure to get a heavyweight title shot one of the biggest injustices in American sports history.
Later Career and Life After Boxing
Langford fought heavyweight Fred Fulton twice. He lost the first fight by technical knockout in the seventh round. He lost the second by a four-round decision. Langford was 34 and 35 years old in these fights. He was much heavier but shorter than Fulton.
On June 5, 1922, Langford knocked out Tiger Flowers in the second round. At this time, Langford was mostly blind. Flowers would soon become the World Middleweight Champion.
In 1923, Sam Langford fought and won boxing's last "fight to the finish." This was for the Mexican Heavyweight title.
His last fight was in 1926. By then, his eyesight had gotten so bad that he had to retire. Langford was 43 years old and completely blind.
There are old films of Langford fighting Fireman Jim Flynn and Bill Lang.
One story shows how smart Langford was. In one fight, he was told not to knock out his opponent until after the seventh round. So, for seven rounds, he just lightly hit his opponent. When the eighth round started, Langford touched gloves with his confused opponent. "What's wrong, Sam, it's not the last round!" his opponent said. "It is for you, son," Langford replied. He then quickly knocked his opponent out and left to catch his train. Another story says he told the audience he had a train to catch. He then knocked out his opponent in the first round and left.
Life After Boxing and Legacy
Langford eventually became completely blind. He ended up with no money, living in Harlem, New York City. In 1944, a newspaper article was written about his difficult situation. After the article, fans donated almost $10,000 to help Langford. The column was called "A Dark Man Laughs" and was written by Al Laney. Later, enough money was raised for successful eye surgery. Langford was honored in the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1955. He died a year later in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He had been living in a private nursing home there.
In 1999, Langford was voted Nova Scotia's best male athlete of the 20th century.
In 2013, a jazz group called Tarbaby released a music CD named "Ballad of Sam Langford."
In 2018, Langford was ranked fifth among the top 15 athletes in Nova Scotia's history.
