Ismael Laguna Meneses was born on June 28, 1943, in Colón, Panama. He became a famous professional boxer. People knew him as "El Tigre Colonense," which means "The Colon Tiger." He was so good that he was added to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001.
Ismael Laguna's Boxing Career
Ismael Laguna was a very successful boxer. He became the World Lightweight Champion in 1965. This means he was the best boxer in the world in his weight class at that time.
He later won the championship belt again in 1970. However, he lost his WBC title before losing his WBA title to another boxer named Ken Buchanan.
Laguna tried to win back his lightweight title two more times. In 1967, he lost a 15-round match to Carlos Ortiz. Then, in 1971, he lost another match to Ken Buchanan. After this second loss to Buchanan in 1971, Ismael Laguna decided to stop boxing.
Honors and Achievements
Ismael Laguna received special recognition for his amazing boxing career:
