Armando Ramos (born November 15, 1948 – died July 6, 2008) was an American professional boxer. He was known as "Mando" Ramos. He became a two-time champion in the Lightweight division. This means he held the top title from both the WBC and WBA.

Mando Ramos was born in Long Beach, California. He was one of the most popular boxers in Southern California during the 1960s. Even before turning professional, Ramos was a very talented amateur boxer.

Mando Ramos's Boxing Journey

Mando Ramos started his professional boxing career when he was only 17 years old. By his eighth professional fight, he was already the main event at the famous Olympic Auditorium. This showed how quickly he became a star.

When he was 18, Mando fought and beat Hiroshi Kobayashi. Kobayashi was the reigning Junior Lightweight Champion from Japan. Even though Mando won, it was not a title fight. When he was offered a chance to fight for the "Junior" title, Ramos decided not to. He wanted to fight for the main Lightweight title instead.

Becoming a World Champion

Mando Ramos wanted to challenge the tough Lightweight Champion, Carlos Ortiz. Ortiz had been the champion for more than ten years. However, before Mando could fight Ortiz, another boxer named 'Teo' Cruz defeated Ortiz. So, Ramos then fought Cruz for the title.

Mando Ramos lost the first fight against Cruz by a close decision. But in their rematch, Ramos won by a knockout (KO). This made him the youngest Lightweight Champion in boxing history! He won the WBA, WBC, and The Ring lightweight titles.

A Popular Boxing Star

When Mando Ramos had a fight in Los Angeles, many famous people would come to watch. Movie stars like John Wayne, Bill Cosby, Kirk Douglas, Liz Taylor, and Connie Stevens were often in the audience. Many fans, especially women, loved Mando, and Hollywood called him 'The Wonder Boy'.

Mando Ramos was trained by Jackie McCoy, who is a famous boxing trainer. Ramos fought in ten World title fights during his career. He became a champion twice and earned a lot of money. At one point, he was the highest-paid teenager in the world. His earnings were even higher than most famous athletes at the time, except for Muhammad Ali. Jackie McCoy believed that Mando was the most naturally gifted boxer he had ever seen.

Life After Boxing

Mando Ramos stopped boxing professionally when he was 24 years old. After his boxing career, he wanted to help others. He started a non-profit organization called B.A.A.D. Through this group, he coached, guided, and trained young people in inner-city areas.

Mando Ramos passed away suddenly at his home in San Pedro, California, on July 6, 2008.
