Guglielmo Papaleo (born September 19, 1922 – died November 23, 2006) was an American professional boxer. He was much better known as Willie Pep. He was a World Featherweight boxing champion two times. He held this title between 1942 and 1950.

Willie Pep had a very long boxing career of 26 years. He fought in 241 matches. He won 229 of these matches, lost 11, and had 1 draw. He won 65 times by knockout. Pep was famous for being super fast and hard to hit. Many people think he was one of the best boxers of the 1900s. One boxer said fighting him was "like trying to stomp out a grass fire." Willie Pep joined the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.

Willie Pep's Amazing Boxing Career

Starting as an Amateur Boxer

Willie Pep began boxing as an amateur in 1937. Back then, amateur boxers in Connecticut could earn money. This was during the Great Depression, a time when many people had little money. Willie's father earned only $15 a week. Willie shined shoes to help his family.

He joined a boxing gym with his friend, Johnny Duke. Soon, Willie was earning more money from one night of boxing than his dad made in a week! His mom was worried about him fighting. But his dad, who loved sports, told him to fight on Tuesdays too if he was making so much on Fridays.

In 1938, Willie Pep fought Sugar Ray Robinson. This fight happened in an attic in Norwich, Connecticut. Robinson was heavier than Pep. Robinson won the fight. Pep later said he didn't know who Robinson was at the time. Robinson used a different name to fight for money.

Becoming a Professional Boxer

Willie Pep started his professional boxing career on July 10, 1940. He won his first fight against James McGovern. For his first 25 fights, he stayed in New England. He won all of them! Then he traveled west. He won his 26th fight by knockout in Michigan. After a few more fights, he went to California and won there too.

Pep won his first 41 fights in a row. He then fought Joey Archibald in 1942 and won. After that, he won the New England featherweight title. He kept winning, reaching 52 wins without any losses. In October 1942, he got his first chance to fight for a world championship. He won the World Featherweight Champion title by beating Chalky Wright. He finished 1942 with two more knockout wins.

In 1943, Pep won six more fights, making his record 62 wins and 0 losses. But then, he lost his first fight to Sammy Angott. Just ten days later, Pep was back in the ring and won again. He ended 1943 with five more wins. This included two wins against future champion Sal Bartolo. One of these was to defend his world title.

Nineteen forty-four was a great year for Willie Pep. He won all 16 of his fights. He beat other champions like Willie Joyce and Manuel Ortiz. He also fought Chalky Wright two more times and won. One of these fights was for his featherweight title. He even fought in Canada for the first time and won.

On June 6, 1944, he fought Julie Kogon in Hartford, Connecticut. A huge crowd of 7,751 people watched. Pep won easily.

In 1945, he had eight fights. He won seven and had one draw. He kept his title by beating former champion Phil Terranova.

In 1946, Pep won all 18 of his fights. He knocked out Sal Bartolo in 12 rounds. He also knocked out Chalky Wright in just three rounds. He had a streak of six knockout wins that year.

Plane Crash and Later Career

Willie Pep was in a serious plane crash on January 5, 1947. Despite his injuries, he fought 10 times that year and won all of them. Some people thought he wasn't as good after the crash. He had tough fights against Archie Wilmer and Pedro Biesca. He defended his world featherweight title by knocking out Jock Leslie.

The year 1948 was very important for Pep. He won 15 fights. Then he started his famous four-fight series with Sandy Saddler. Pep kept his title by beating Humberto Sierra. He also beat former champion Paddy DeMarco. But on October 29, he lost his world featherweight title to Sandy Saddler. Saddler won by knockout in the fourth round.

After two more wins, Pep and Saddler fought again in 1949. This time, Pep won back his World Featherweight Championship. He beat Saddler in a 15-round decision. He then defended his title against Eddie Campo, winning by knockout. He ended 1949 by beating former bantamweight champion Harold Dade.

In 1950, Pep won nine fights before facing Saddler for the third time. He defended his title against Charlie Riley and Ray Famechon. But in the third fight with Saddler, Pep lost his World Featherweight Championship again. He couldn't continue after the seventh round because of a shoulder injury.

The year 1951 brought some arguments for Pep. He won eight fights in a row. But his ninth fight was the last one against Sandy Saddler. Pep stopped fighting because blood from his eye was bothering him. Many people said this was a very rough fight. The referee had trouble controlling it. Pep was ahead on points, but he quit after nine rounds.

In 1952, Pep had 12 fights and won 11. He was knocked out by Tommy Collins, but he also beat Billy Lima twice. In 1953, Pep won all 11 of his fights. He had a 17-fight winning streak going into 1954. He lost to Lulu Perez, but then won three more fights that year.

Willie Pep continued boxing for five more years, retiring in 1960. He came back in 1964 and boxed for two more years. During this last part of his career, he won 43 fights and lost only five. He lost to Hogan Bassey, who later became a world champion. Pep's very last fight was in 1966, which he lost.

Willie Pep finished his career with an amazing record: 229 wins, 11 losses, and 1 draw. He had 65 wins by knockout.

Life After Boxing

After he retired, Willie Pep and Sandy Saddler had some friendly exhibition matches. In 1980, Pep sued a magazine called Sports Illustrated. The magazine had suggested he purposely lost his fight with Lulu Perez. Pep lost the lawsuit.

Pep stayed involved in boxing. He worked as an inspector and a referee. In 1977, he was chosen for the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame.

Willie Pep lived in a nursing home in Connecticut in his later years. He suffered from dementia pugilistica, a brain condition sometimes seen in boxers. He passed away on November 23, 2006. He is buried in Rocky Hill, CT. He had four children and three stepchildren.

Awards and Recognition

  • In 1945, The Ring magazine named Willie Pep their Fighter of the Year.
  • He was one of the first people to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
  • Ring Magazine ranked him sixth on their list of the 80 Best Fighters of the Last 80 Years in 2002.
  • Boxing expert Bert Sugar said Pep was the third greatest fighter of all time.
  • In 2007, ESPN ranked him 5th on their list of the 50 Greatest Boxers Of All Time.
  • The Houston Boxing Hall Of Fame voted Willie Pep as the Greatest Featherweight Ever in 2014.

"No-Punch" Round Story

There's a famous story about Willie Pep winning a round without throwing any punches. This supposedly happened in his fight against Jackie Graves on July 25, 1946. The story says Pep told reporters before the fight that he would win the third round without throwing "a punch of anger."

However, this story is debated. Some newspapers from that time don't mention it. One newspaper, The Minneapolis Star, even said the third round was "toe to toe slugging." It said Pep landed his best punches in that round. So, it's not clear if the "no-punch" round really happened.
