Jack McAuliffe was a famous Irish boxer, born on March 24, 1866. He fought most of his matches from Williamsburg, Brooklyn. People called him "The Napoleon of the Ring." He was one of only fifteen world boxing champions who never lost a fight!
He was the first boxer to hold the World Lightweight championship. He held this title from 1886 to 1893. He was also the first European boxer to retire as a world champion without any losses. Later, he was honored in two famous halls of fame: The Ring Boxing Hall of Fame (in 1954) and the International Boxing Hall of Fame (in 1995).

Jack McAuliffe's Early Life
Jack McAuliffe was born in Cork, Ireland, on March 24, 1866. His parents were Cornelius McAuliffe and Jane Bailey. When Jack was about five years old, his family moved to the United States. He grew up in Bangor, Maine.
Becoming a Boxer
Jack started his boxing journey as an amateur in 1883. Soon after, he became a professional boxer. One of his early professional fights was against Jem Carney. They fought for an amazing 78 rounds, ending in a draw!
In 1888, he fought Billy Dacey for the lightweight championship. Jack won by knocking out Billy in the eleventh round. He was known for being a very strong fighter. He could use both hands well and had quick, "cat-like" reflexes. In 1897, he successfully defended his title against Billy Myer in a big match.
Jack's Personal Life
Jack McAuliffe was married two times. Both of his wives were actresses. His first wife was Katie Hart. She acted in funny plays. After Katie passed away, Jack married Catherine Rowe in 1894. Her stage name was Pearl Inman. She was part of a singing and dancing group called The Inman Sisters.
Between his marriages, he also dated another actress named Sadie McDonald. Jack and Catherine moved back to Bangor, Maine, in 1894. There, he trained for an upcoming fight in New York.
Retirement and Later Life
Jack McAuliffe stopped boxing in 1897. The International Boxing Hall of Fame says he had 36 professional fights. He was undefeated in 30 of those fights, winning 22 by knockout. He also had five draws and one fight with no official decision. He successfully defended his world lightweight title against six different boxers during his career.
Jack McAuliffe passed away on November 5, 1937. He died at his home in Forest Hills, Queens, New York.
