Brian Mitchell's Early Boxing Days
Brian Mitchell started his boxing journey in late 1981. He won his first three fights very quickly, all within two months. By the end of November, he had won five times. He even knocked out two opponents, Simon Zondo and Mose Mthiyane, in the fourth round.
In 1982, he started strong with another knockout win. But then, he faced Jacob Morake and lost a 10-round fight. This was the only loss in his entire career! After this, Brian's record was six wins and one loss.
He quickly bounced back, winning his next two fights. Then, he had a draw (a tie) with Frank Khonkhobe. But in a rematch later that year, Brian beat Khonkhobe.
Winning the South African Title
In March 1983, Brian Mitchell won a fight against Jerome Gumede. This win earned him a chance to fight for the South African junior-lightweight title against Chris Whiteboy. Brian took his chance and knocked out Whiteboy in the ninth round to become the champion!
He successfully defended his new title several times. Bashew Sibaca lasted 10 rounds, but Graham Gcola was knocked out in just two rounds.
Brian then faced Jacob Morake again, the only boxer who had ever beaten him. This time, Brian won the 12-round fight. He also beat Frank Khonkhobe for the third time. Brian finished 1983 with a quick first-round knockout win.
More Title Defences
In March 1984, Brian Mitchell fought Jacob Morake for the third time. Brian defended his South African title once more. He continued his winning streak, beating Carlos Miguel Rodriguez and Iland Matthews. Nika Khumalo only lasted two rounds in his title challenge. Brian also outpointed Aladin Stevens.
Brian started 1985 with a knockout win against Nyungi Mtiya. He then had two more knockout wins against Carlos Rodriguez and Vicente Jorge. His record improved to 25 wins, one loss, and one draw.
Sadly, in November 1985, Brian fought Jacob Morake for the fourth time. Brian won the fight with a knockout in the twelfth round. However, Jacob Morake got seriously hurt during the fight and later passed away.
Brian Mitchell returned to boxing in March 1986, knocking out Julio Ruiz. In June, he defended his South African junior-lightweight title against Bushy Mosoeu, winning on points.
Becoming a World Champion
In September 1986, Brian Mitchell got his big chance to fight for a world title! He challenged Alfredo Layne for the world junior lightweight title in Sun City, South Africa. Brian took control of the fight, knocking down the champion three times in the tenth round. He won the title by knockout!
After winning the world title, Brian travelled to San Juan to fight Jose Rivera. It was a very tough fight, and it ended in a draw after 15 rounds. Less than two months later, he had another knockout win. On 31 July, he fought Francisco Fernandez in Panama City. Brian was in great shape and knocked out the challenger in the fourteenth round.
Brian then travelled to France, where he beat Daniel Londas on points. He ended the year in Italy with a ninth-round knockout of Salvatore Curcetti.
Defending the World Title
In April 1988, Brian Mitchell fought Jose Rivera for the second time in Spain. He successfully defended his world title again. He also won a non-title match against Danilo Cabrera. Then, he outpointed Jim McDonnell to defend his title for the sixth time.
In 1989, Brian went to Italy and knocked out Salvatore Bottiglieri. He also beat Jackie Beard in Italy and then his namesake, Irving Mitchell, in the USA. In his last fight of 1989, Brian won a non-title match against Felipe Orozco.
The next year, he faced Jackie Beard again and won. He then defeated Frank Mitchell to keep his junior-lightweight title.
A Tough Challenge and New Title
In 1991, Brian Mitchell travelled to Sacramento to fight Tony "The Tiger" Lopez. Many people thought Lopez was the toughest opponent Brian had ever faced. The fight was very close and ended in a draw. Many boxing experts were surprised by this decision, as they felt Brian had won.
Because Brian fought Lopez for the IBF title, he lost his WBA world title. For the first time since 1986, he was no longer a world champion.
However, Brian got a rematch with Tony Lopez in Sacramento in September. This time, Brian made sure there was no doubt. He won with a clear points victory, claiming the IBF title!
Brian Mitchell decided to retire from boxing after this big win. But he came back for two more fights in 1994 and 1995, winning both, before finally retiring for good.
He ended his amazing career with 45 wins, only one loss, and three draws. He defended his junior-lightweight title 12 times! Only his fellow South African boxer, Vuyani Bungu, has a better record with 13 successful defences.
Many people in South Africa believe Brian Mitchell is the greatest boxer the country has ever produced. Today, he helps train new boxers in South Africa.
Brian Mitchell was honoured by being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2009. He also received special "Springbok colours" (a national sports award) in 1989.
