Brian Mitchell's Early Boxing Career
Brian Mitchell started his boxing journey in late 1981. He quickly won his first three fights. In less than two months, he had five wins. He defeated Simon Zondo and Mose Mthiyane by knockout.
First Loss and Comeback
In 1982, Brian began with a quick knockout win. However, he then faced Jacob Morake and lost over 10 rounds. This was the only loss in his entire career! After this, Brian's record was six wins and one defeat. He soon won two more fights. Then, he had a draw with Frank Khonkhobe. In a rematch, Brian beat Khonkhobe.
Winning the South African Title
In March 1983, Brian won a fight against Jerome Gumede. This earned him a chance to fight for the South African junior-lightweight title. He fought Chris Whiteboy and won by knockout in the ninth round. Brian became the champion! He defended his title against Bashew Sibaca and Graham Gcola.
Brian then faced Jacob Morake again, the only boxer who had beaten him. This time, Brian won on points. He also beat Frank Khonkhobe for the third time. Brian finished 1983 with another knockout win.
Defending His Title
In March 1984, Brian fought Jacob Morake for the third time. Brian successfully defended his South African title. He continued to win, beating Carlos Miguel Rodriguez and Iland Matthews. Nika Khumalo lasted only two rounds in his title challenge. Brian then outpointed Aladin Stevens.
Brian started 1985 with a knockout win over Nyungi Mtiya. He then had two more knockout wins against Carlos Rodriguez and Vicente Jorge. His record improved to 25 wins, one loss, and one draw. He beat Job Sisanga on points.
In November 1985, Brian fought Jacob Morake for the fourth time. Brian won by knockout in the twelfth round. Sadly, Jacob Morake later passed away from head injuries. This was a very difficult moment in Brian's career.
Brian returned to boxing in March 1986. He knocked out Julio Ruiz. In June, he defended his South African junior-lightweight title against Bushy Mosoeu. Brian won that fight on points.
Becoming a World Champion
In September 1986, Brian got his big chance. He fought Alfredo Layne for the world junior lightweight title in South Africa. Brian took his opportunity! He knocked out the champion in the tenth round. Brian Mitchell was now a world champion!
First World Title Defenses
After winning the title, Brian traveled to San Juan to fight Jose Rivera. It was a tough fight, and it ended in a draw. Less than two months later, he knocked out Aurelio Benitez in a non-title fight. On 31 July, he faced Francisco Fernandez in Panama City. Brian was in great shape and knocked out the challenger in the fourteenth round.
Brian then fought in France, where he beat Daniel Londas on points. He ended the year in Italy with a knockout win over Salvatore Curcetti.

Losing and Regaining a World Title
In 1991, Brian traveled to Sacramento to fight Tony "The Tiger" Lopez. Many thought Lopez was the toughest opponent of Brian's career. The fight ended in a draw, which surprised many boxing experts. Brian was then stripped of his WBA title because he fought Lopez for the IBF title. For the first time since 1986, Brian was without a world title.
However, Brian faced Lopez again in Sacramento in September. This time, Brian made sure he won! He had a clear points victory, and he claimed the IBF title.
Brian Mitchell retired from boxing after that fight. But he came back for two more wins in 1994 and 1995. After those fights, he retired from boxing for good.
He finished his amazing career with 45 wins, only one loss, and three draws. Brian defended his junior-lightweight title 12 times. This record was only beaten by his fellow South African, Vuyani Bungu, who had 13 successful defenses.
Many people in South Africa believe Brian Mitchell is the country's greatest boxer ever. Today, he is a top boxing trainer in South Africa.
