Ildefonso Falcones was born in 1959. His father was a lawyer, and his mother managed their home. When he was 17, Ildefonso was a talented horseback rider. He even became the Junior Champion of Spain in show jumping. He was also good at field hockey.

His sports career ended when his father passed away that same year. Ildefonso studied at the College of San Ignacio's Jesuits in Spain. He then went to university. He started studying both economics and law.
